Huawei's stylish wide foldable is already overshadowing the iPhone Fold.
Huawei has officially unveiled a wide-format foldable phone, reigniting discussions about the iPhone Fold rumors.
The yet-to-be-released foldable iPhone now faces an unofficial competitor in the Huawei Pura X Max. Huawei has begun teasing the device with official materials ahead of its launch in China on April 20. The company has shared image posters that display an unusually wide foldable design, resembling a compact tablet more than the taller, narrower foldables we are accustomed to.
The Pura X Max is generating buzz for several reasons. Official images released by Huawei showcase the device in blue, white, black, and orange, featuring a boxy, passport-like shape and a triple rear camera configuration. Its super wide foldable design is distinct, a format that has only surfaced in rumors about future Apple and Samsung devices until now.
The comparison to the iPhone Fold is significant here. Recent CAD renderings and rumors about the first foldable iPhone indicated a similarly wide design language, diverging from the traditional styles seen in the Galaxy Z Flip or Z Fold models. However, Huawei appears to be leading the way with a broader format that enhances reading, multitasking, video, and gaming experiences.
Gone are the awkward aspect ratios on the main screen. The wider display transforms into a compact tablet-like design when unfolded.
The excitement surrounding the Pura X Max is straightforward: it is an actual product.
In contrast, the iPhone Fold remains enveloped in online speculation and rumors, much of which may be fabricated, speculative renders, or supply chain gossip. Meanwhile, Huawei presents a tangible product complete with official visuals, a launch date, and a design that responds to the pressing question of "what should the next major foldable shape be?" before Apple can weigh in.
