Gmail on mobile now includes end-to-end encryption to protect your emails from prying eyes.

One year after its launch on desktop, Gmail’s most robust privacy feature has finally made its way to mobile, where the majority of enterprise emails are actually composed.

Your most sensitive emails in Gmail are now better secured on your mobile device. Google has officially begun to roll out end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for Gmail on Android and iOS.

For the first time, eligible Android and iOS users can write and read encrypted emails directly within the Gmail app, eliminating the need to download and install third-party applications.

How does E2EE function in Gmail on mobile devices?

Gmail’s E2EE was first introduced for desktop users in April 2025, coinciding with its 21st anniversary. Support for external recipients was added later in October 2025. However, the feature did not initially extend to smartphones, creating a significant privacy gap.

The April 2026 update finally addresses this issue. If you’re familiar with E2EE from other messaging platforms, you can easily understand its implementation in Gmail: only you and the recipient have access to the email content.

While drafting an email, you can tap the lock icon, enable the "additional encryption" toggle, and send it. If the recipient is using Gmail, it will arrive in their inbox like any regular email. Conversely, if they're on a different platform, they will receive a secure link to read and respond via a web browser, without needing a Gmail account.

Who has access to E2EE in Gmail for mobile?

Here’s the catch: Gmail for mobile will feature E2EE exclusively for Google Workspace Enterprise Plus accounts equipped with the Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus add-on. Admins must first enable access for Android and iOS through the client-side encryption interface.

This means that personal Gmail users on mobile will not have access to this feature. Nonetheless, by closing the gap between Gmail on web and mobile, Google has alleviated a significant concern for clients comparing Workspace with the Microsoft 365 suite.

During a 2024 visit to Dharamshala, a renowned spiritual destination in India, I was struck by the number of remote workers occupying café seats, focused on their laptops. At least three of my dorm mates claimed to manage social media content for US-based creators with large followings. One enterprising 17-year-old excitedly informed me that she managed regional YouTube channels for a popular US creator who boasts over three million subscribers and aimed to capture the densely populated Southeast Asian market.

NVIDIA’s highly anticipated N1 chip has surfaced again through a leak, and if this most recent information proves accurate, the future of laptops could get quite intriguing. A listing found on a Chinese resale platform seemingly displays an engineering sample motherboard featuring Nvidia’s forthcoming System-on-Chip. While this is not a formal announcement and skepticism is valid, the details are certainly noteworthy.

Microsoft is keen to clarify that its Copilot AI is not solely for entertainment.

Microsoft seems to be addressing a confusing contradiction regarding its Copilot AI, which became apparent after one of its documents downplayed its usefulness compared to the company’s marketing claims. Recently, users noticed a warning in Microsoft's Copilot terms of use stating that the service is for "entertainment purposes only," emphasizing that it may make errors, could fail to function as intended, and should not be depended upon for critical advice. This section also indicated that users assume all risk when using Copilot, which raised eyebrows given Microsoft’s aggressive promotion of Copilot as a productivity tool across Windows, Microsoft 365, and enterprise software.
