Apple's upcoming MacBook Neo is currently in development and will receive significant enhancements.
More RAM, a faster chip, and a 2027 timeline indicate that the next MacBook Neo is being developed even before the current model has fully established its presence.
A short time after the initial MacBook Neo was launched, Apple is already planning its successor. Tim Culpan, a tech columnist based in Taiwan and a former Bloomberg reporter, mentioned in his newsletter, Culpium, that a new generation of MacBook Neo is expected to debut in 2027, featuring two significant enhancements.
What are the upcoming changes, and what will remain the same?
The current version of the MacBook Neo is powered by the A18 Pro chip, which is identical to the chip in the iPhone 16 Pro, and its performance is roughly comparable to the M1 chip found in the 2020 MacBook Air. The next iteration, however, might utilize a binned version of the A19 Pro chip (with five cores instead of a GPU).
For those who need a refresher, the A19 Pro chip is used in the iPhone 17 Pro models. While the performance gain may not be drastically noticeable, it could be in the lower double digits, potentially benefiting tasks like multitasking, using split view applications, or handling other demanding processes.
Alongside the new processor, the rumored MacBook Neo 2 may also come with 12GB of unified memory, an upgrade from the current model's 8GB. This enhancement is anticipated to boost the overall performance and lifespan of the device, starting at $599.
Why is Apple already considering the next version?
The existing MacBook Neo series is performing quite well in sales. Culpan points out that Apple is in discussions with suppliers to accelerate production due to exceeding initial sales expectations.
Although the company has yet to finalize manufacturing capacity and supply chain issues related to increased output, it appears to be gearing up for a second-generation MacBook Neo set for a 2027 release.
One key takeaway is that Apple envisions the MacBook Neo as a product line rather than just a single device. Priced at $599, it targets a market segment that Apple has largely overlooked for years. A 2027 iteration with enhanced processing power and more memory could potentially yield higher sales figures compared to the current model.
