Claude has just closed the door on OpenClaw, unless you are willing to pay extra.
Anthropic has just made a decision that will surely disappoint power users. One of the most popular methods for enhancing Claude, via OpenClaw, has effectively been restricted by a new paywall. And yes, it’s as problematic as it sounds.
Anthropic has significantly increased the cost of OpenClaw.
As per Boris Cherny, Claude Code executive at Anthropic, the subscription model for Claude has been altered. Now, your standard Claude subscription will no longer cover the use of third-party tools. Instead, this usage will be subject to a separate pay-as-you-go billing system.
Beginning tomorrow at 12pm PT, standard Claude subscriptions will not include usage of third-party tools like OpenClaw. You can still access these tools with your Claude login through additional usage bundles (now available at a discount), or via a Claude API key.— Boris Cherny (@bcherny) April 3, 2026
What does this imply? Essentially, the workaround that many users relied upon, which allowed them to use their Claude credits in OpenClaw to conduct more sophisticated processes, is functionally no longer viable. Those wishing to maintain that setup will now incur additional costs on top of their existing subscription, either through usage bundles or API access.
OpenClaw
Furthermore, OpenClaw was not simply a niche application; it gained popularity for managing practical tasks like emails, calendars, and flight check-ins, transforming Claude into something resembling a genuine assistant. However, that success appears to have backfired, reportedly placing strain on Anthropic’s infrastructure and necessitating this restriction.
This seems less like a minor adjustment and more like a serious enforcement.
Let’s be real; this isn’t just a change in pricing; it’s a clear message. Anthropic appears to be establishing strict boundaries: if you’re utilizing Claude in ways they did not foresee (or monetize adequately), expect that avenue to close swiftly.
There’s also a strategic element to this. By increasing the cost of third-party usage, Anthropic is subtly guiding users toward its own ecosystem, such as Claude Cowork. This approach is beneficial for maintaining control, but not ideal for those who preferred customizing their workflows with a variety of tools. To alleviate the impact, the company is offering a one-time credit equal to a month’s subscription and discounted bundles. However, it’s worth noting that this feels more like a temporary solution than a genuine remedy.
