IREX introduces AI fire detection technology that operates on current camera networks.
[Washington, DC – April 2, 2026] – IREX, an international leader in ethical AI and intelligent video analytics operating in more than 10 countries with over 300,000 cameras, has announced a significant update to its FireTrack smoke and fire detection module. This update is hardware-free and extends FireTrack’s use to essential infrastructures like energy plants and transportation centers, as well as public institutions such as schools and hospitals, residential and commercial structures, and parks, including national parks and forests.
Utilizing IREX’s ethical AI platform, the upgraded module processes visual information within just 75–105 milliseconds – roughly 0.1 second – allowing for nearly instantaneous danger identification. This enhancement, along with improved model precision and robustness in adverse lighting or weather conditions, facilitates swift intervention from first responders, helping to mitigate the risk of severe loss.
The enhanced model examines the progression of fire and smoke over time, effectively differentiating real threats from benign visuals such as fog, headlights, or reflections. This significantly reduces false alarms, enabling safety teams to concentrate on actual incidents requiring intervention.
To enhance accuracy, IREX has revamped how the system detects fire and smoke. Instead of traditional bounding boxes surrounding objects, the revised module employs segmentation, applying a color mask to the precise areas where fire or smoke is present: green for fire and red for smoke, thereby more accurately portraying their irregular forms. This technique enhances the system’s capability to pinpoint hazards accurately within the scene.
The updated FireTrack provides quicker alerts compared to conventional optical or heat-based detectors by actively analyzing live video feeds for smoke and fire visual signatures in real time.
“Since the IREX AI platform integrates effortlessly with existing camera networks, municipalities and organizations can enhance fire safety without needing to install specialized sensor hardware – they simply connect their CCTV systems to IREX,” explained Serge Smirnoff, Head of PR at IREX. “Each detection event is accompanied by a video snapshot for immediate visual confirmation, allowing operators and first responders to assess the situation swiftly and respond effectively.”
By utilizing the existing surveillance infrastructure, the new FireTrack model provides a cost-effective solution for comprehensive fire safety in both urban environments and natural areas.
“I am incredibly proud of the IREX team today. This FireTrack launch is a significant milestone that embodies our core mission to implement ethical, intelligent AI in addressing the world's most pressing issues,” stated Calvin Yadav, CEO of IREX. “We are enhancing the resilience of communities worldwide, demonstrating that every hour dedicated to responsibly designed artificial intelligence is actively saving lives long before an alarm goes off.”
