Amazon, affected by the war, is introducing a fuel surcharge that may increase your shopping costs.
Third-party sellers on Amazon will encounter new fees beginning April 17 due to rising oil prices.
A conflict taking place thousands of miles away is expected to raise the cost of your Amazon purchases. Amazon has introduced a 3.5% "fuel and logistics-related surcharge" on seller fees, which affects third-party sellers utilizing Amazon's fulfillment services in the US and Canada.
As reported by CNBC, the surcharge takes effect on April 17. Although it primarily targets sellers rather than buyers, it's highly likely that consumers will ultimately bear the cost.
The rise in oil prices is linked to the ongoing tensions among the US, Israel, and Iran, which have disrupted supply expectations and further increased prices. Before the conflict erupted, crude oil was trading for less than $60 per barrel, but it has remained above $100 for over a week now.
For sellers, this surcharge implies higher expenses, as Amazon has previously absorbed these rising costs, but that is no longer viable. The new surcharge translates to an average increase of about 17 cents per unit for shipments processed through Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), the popular service that handles picking, packing, and shipping for most of Amazon's approximately 2 million third-party sellers.
Amazon representative Ashley Vanicek stated that the surcharge is "meaningfully lower" than the rates charged by other major carriers. Indeed, UPS, FedEx, and the US Postal Service have each imposed their own fuel surcharges since the conflict began, and some airlines have also begun adding fuel surcharges on longer-distance flights.
While the surcharge is primarily directed at sellers, history shows that sellers often pass these additional costs onto customers in the form of increased prices, as was the case with past tariffs.
Rising chip tariffs may also contribute to higher costs for your next PC upgrade and affect overall electronics pricing. Should the conflict in the Middle East continue, the total in your Amazon cart may gradually rise as a result.
