What makes this week's moon mission particularly significant for Jeremy Hansen?

      We are only a few days away from the inaugural crewed Artemis mission!

      NASA is in the final stages of preparation for the highly anticipated Artemis II mission, which will send astronauts to the moon for the first time in over fifty years.

      The space agency plans to launch at 6:24 p.m. ET on Wednesday, April 1, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

      The crew consists of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen. They will journey aboard an Orion spacecraft, propelled by NASA's powerful SLS (Space Launch System) rocket.

      After a couple of days in low-Earth orbit to check the spacecraft’s systems, the crew will direct the Orion towards a rendezvous with the moon. The 10-day mission will not land on the lunar surface but will fly around it before heading back to Earth.

      This mission holds special significance for each crew member, but especially for Hansen, as this will mark his first trip to space. While Wiseman, Glover, and Koch have each traveled to the International Space Station (ISS) during their initial orbital experiences, Hansen will soar several hundred thousand miles farther from Earth for his debut journey.

      Hansen will also make history as the first non-American and the first Canadian to reach the moon, making him a significant national figure and a celebrated hero.

      “I want Canadians to feel that pride,” Hansen shared with CBC upon being announced as an Artemis II crew member in 2023. “I want Canadians to realize that we are doing great things here and can achieve the seemingly impossible if we have faith in ourselves.”

      Artemis II is also a historic mission for Glover and Koch, who will become the first Black person and the first woman to travel to the moon, setting remarkable milestones in their own rights.

      With the launch date fast approaching, the four astronauts are currently in quarantine, reviewing the flight plan to ensure they're fully prepared for a once-in-a-lifetime mission.
