AI is becoming remarkably proficient, yet studies indicate that the notion of AI creativity is merely an illusion.

Recent research indicates that while generative AI can imitate creativity, it does not truly create.

AI has become remarkably skilled at writing, designing, and brainstorming ideas. However, a new study published in Advanced Science by researchers from the University of Barcelona’s Institute of Neuroscience, along with collaborators from IDIBELL, CVC-UAB, and the Vienna Cognitive Science Hub, contends that AI's “creativity” is superficial and not genuine.

The study reveals that although generative AI can generate outputs that seem creative, it predominantly reconfigures patterns from existing data rather than producing genuinely original concepts. It suggests that AI has difficulty grasping the deeper “thinking process” associated with creativity, despite the final products appearing impressive. Essentially, while AI can simulate creativity, it lacks true understanding.

Is AI outperforming humans in creativity assessments?

The answer is both yes and no. Comprehensive studies comparing AI with over 100,000 human participants have shown that AI can outperform the average individual on certain structured creativity evaluations. However, the most creative humans consistently surpass AI, often by a significant margin. Therefore, while AI elevates the baseline level of creativity, it still falls short of reaching the highest levels, where originality, intuition, and unique perspectives play a critical role.

This difference arises because human creativity is influenced by emotions, experiences, context, and personal viewpoints—elements that AI does not possess. Moreover, AI tends to gravitate towards familiar patterns, with some studies indicating that AI-generated content may become repetitive or clichéd without human input. This limitation is why AI excels best as a creative assistant, aiding in idea generation or enhancing workflows, rather than replacing human creativity.

So... is AI the artist or merely the assistant?

This isn’t about AI competing with humans, but rather AI collaborating with them. These tools excel at providing a foundation, helping users generate solid ideas more quickly than ever. However, the pinnacle of creativity still belongs to humans. AI may remix, refine, and expedite creative processes, but that unpredictable spark that leads to truly original creations remains a uniquely human trait.

Smart glasses were already concerning, but now they have become a tool for cheating.

From privacy invasion to exam fraud, a new issue is emerging. Smart glasses, already criticized for privacy risks, are now being exploited for cheating, and it’s surprisingly straightforward. A recent report from Rest of World reveals how AI-driven smart glasses can scan exam questions and display answers directly on the lenses, effectively functioning as real-time cheating devices. Some students are even renting these glasses for as little as $6 per day, using them not just for navigation or translation but specifically to secure an unfair advantage during exams.

An AI agent has monitored Guinness prices across Irish pubs—now I want one for coffee and ramen.

There’s something fascinating about delegating your curiosity to an AI that doesn’t tire or feel awkward. If an AI agent can reach out to thousands of pubs to create a Guinness price index, why stop there? Why not deploy one to track the prices of your daily coffee or late-night ramen?

I’m convinced—I want one of those.

Meta's upcoming smart glasses appear to be a boon for individuals who wear prescription lenses.

Codenamed Scriber and Blazer and already undergoing FCC examination, Meta's AI glasses tailored for prescription users are shaping up to be the company’s most inclusive wearable launch yet.

For the billions who depend on corrective eyewear daily (myself included), smart glasses have often been an awkward topic. While it’s possible to obtain Ray-Ban Meta frames with prescription lenses, it seems Meta has something better in the works. A Bloomberg report suggests that Meta is developing two new AI glasses specifically designed for prescription wearers, rather than treating them as an afterthought. These models may come in both rectangular and rounded styles and will be sold through standard prescription eyewear retailers, unlike current versions.
