Elon Musk is constructing a TeraFab chip manufacturing facility, and it’s unlike anything else on the planet.
The global chip supply currently satisfies only 2% of Musk's requirements. Consequently, he is opting to create his own chips.
Elon Musk mentioned that the chips available for purchase today fulfill merely about 2% of what his companies need. Instead of waiting for the global supply to improve, he announced TeraFab on Saturday night, which will be a chip factory in Austin, established as a partnership between Tesla and SpaceX.
The announcement was made during a livestream from the old Seaholm Power Plant situated in downtown Austin. “We either construct the TeraFab, or we don't have the chips, and we require the chips, thus we are going to build the TeraFab,” Musk stated. The factory is set to be constructed on the Tesla campus in the eastern part of Travis County.
Why is this announcement significant?
TeraFab stands out from current chip manufacturers due to its layout. The entire process, which includes producing lithography masks, manufacturing logic and memory chips, along with packaging and testing, will all occur within a single facility. Musk asserts that this setup is unique worldwide at present.
The benefit of this configuration is a swift design loop. “I can't stress enough how critical it is to be able to manufacture a chip, test it, modify the design, produce another one, and conduct everything within a single location,” he remarked, indicating that this method could enhance their chip improvement cycle “exponentially compared to anything else available.”
What types of chips will the company manufacture?
TeraFab will create two categories of chips. The first type is tailored for edge inference, intended for Tesla vehicles and the Optimus humanoid robots. Regarding the anticipated demand for this first type of chip, Musk was straightforward, stating, “I expect humanoid robot production to range between a billion and 10 billion units annually. So that’s substantial."
The second type is designed to withstand the harsh conditions of space, capable of enduring radiation and high-energy ions that would damage standard chips. Musk also confirmed that Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI will continue sourcing chips from TSMC, Samsung, and Micron, expressing his hope for their rapid expansion.
Interesting concept, but what is the timeline?
Honestly, what Musk showcased during the livestream is truly thrilling. The ambition to push the boundaries of chip physics, explore unconventional designs, and iterate them quicker than anyone else globally is the kind of vision that could drive transformative change.
However, no specific timeline was provided for when TeraFab will begin chip production. Considering that Tesla announced the Roadster more than ten years ago, which has yet to be delivered, I will temper my enthusiasm until the first chip comes off the assembly line.

Korean researchers have achieved a breakthrough in underground wireless communication, which could be life-saving in critical situations.
For years, being underground meant losing signal and connectivity. However, researchers at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in Korea have transformed this issue with a significant advancement that may seem straightforward but is indeed remarkable. The technology allows for wireless voice communication up to 100 meters underground. This is a world first, and its significance is greater than it may initially appear.
A new video from South Korea showcases a humanoid robot exhibiting extraordinary human-like movement.
The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) released a video featuring the field tests and interaction abilities of the KAIST Humanoid v0.7, developed at KAIST’s Dynamic Robot Control & Design Laboratory (DRCD). The impressive robot utilizes actuators and technology created within the institute.
