Elon Musk is constructing a TeraFab chip factory, and it is unlike anything else on the planet.
The global supply of chips currently satisfies only 2% of Elon Musk's requirements. As a result, he is opting to create his own chips.
Musk disclosed that the chips he can procure today only amount to approximately 2% of what is actually needed by his companies. Instead of waiting for the global supply chain to improve, he introduced TeraFab on Saturday night, which will be a chip manufacturing facility located in Austin and is a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX.
This announcement was made during a livestream from the former Seaholm Power Plant situated in downtown Austin. Musk remarked, "We either construct TeraFab, or we won’t have the chips, and we require those chips, hence we are going to establish TeraFab." The factory is set to be located on the Tesla campus in eastern Travis County.
What makes this announcement significant?
TeraFab distinguishes itself from existing chip manufacturers due to its design. The complete process—from creating lithography masks to producing logic and memory chips, along with packaging and testing—will occur under one roof. Musk asserted that such a setup doesn’t currently exist anywhere else in the world.
The benefit is a swift design cycle. “I cannot stress enough how crucial it is to create a chip, test it, modify the design, manufacture another, all within a single facility,” he mentioned, noting that this method could significantly enhance their chip improvement cycle compared to anything else globally.
What types of chips will the company actually manufacture?
TeraFab is slated to produce two categories of chips. The first is tailored for edge inference, aimed at Tesla vehicles and Optimus humanoid robots. Regarding the anticipated demand for this chip, Musk stated directly, “I foresee humanoid robot production reaching anywhere from a billion up to 10 billion units annually. That’s a substantial quantity.”
The second type is fortified for space conditions, designed to withstand radiation and high-energy ions that could damage standard chips. Musk also mentioned that Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI will continue sourcing chips from TSMC, Samsung, and Micron, and expressed his desire for these companies to expand as rapidly as possible.
It's an intriguing idea, but what’s the timeline?
What Musk showcased in the livestream is genuinely thrilling. The ambition to push the boundaries of chip technology, explore unconventional designs, and rapidly iterate on them could potentially lead to transformative changes.
However, no specific timeline has been provided for when TeraFab will start chip production. Given that Tesla revealed the Roadster over ten years ago and it has yet to be delivered, I will temper my excitement until the first chip is produced.

Korean researchers have recently achieved underground wireless communication, even through solid rock, potentially saving lives in critical situations.
For years, going underground meant losing communication and a means of connection. However, researchers at ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) have revolutionized this situation with a breakthrough that may sound simple but is truly impressive.
This technology enables voice communication 100 meters below ground, wirelessly. This is a world-first development, and it holds more significance than one might think.
A new video from South Korea showcases a humanoid robot exhibiting astonishingly lifelike movement.
A recent video features field tests and interaction capabilities of KAIST Humanoid v0.7, created at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). This advanced humanoid robot has been developed at KAIST’s Dynamic Robot Control & Design Laboratory (DRCD) and utilizes actuators and technologies developed in-house.
Amidst various risks and challenges, AI is assisting distressed individuals in locating their lost pets.
While AI is often linked to deepfakes, misinformation, and general annoyance, there exists one application that feels refreshingly human: helping people find their lost pets.
