The Steam Machine could become more expensive as Valve reevaluates its pricing due to the memory shortage.

The company is reassessing pricing and availability due to ongoing component shortages impacting supply.

Shortly after the introduction of the Steam Machine last November, Valve indicated that the device would not be priced to compete with consoles such as the Xbox or PlayStation. While specific figures were not disclosed, the company mentioned that the Steam Machine would be aligned in price with a PC of comparable hardware. Now, in advance of the launch, Valve has stated that pricing may be subject to further adjustments because of the persistent memory shortage.

Previously, the Steam Machine was estimated to cost between $500 and $1,000 based on its specs and configuration; however, it may now debut at a higher price point. In a recent blog entry, Valve noted that it had originally planned to disclose pricing and availability details by this time, but due to ongoing shortages impacting memory and storage, it needs to “revisit” both the shipping schedule and pricing for the Steam Machine and Steam Frame.

Despite these changes, Valve has maintained its target of delivering the devices in the first half of 2026 but acknowledged that there is still “work to do to finalize concrete pricing and launch dates.” Additionally, the company has published a set of FAQs addressing various aspects of its forthcoming hardware.

Valve reiterates Steam Machine performance and upgrade options

According to Valve, the Steam Machine will be able to run most Steam games at 4K resolution with 60fps using AMD FSR, although more demanding games may require lower frame rates with VRR enabled or a downgrade to 1080p resolution. The company has also confirmed that both the SSD and RAM will be accessible and upgradeable by users. Furthermore, Valve intends to release faceplate CAD models in the upcoming months to assist third-party manufacturers in creating custom faceplates for the Steam Machine.

For the time being, potential buyers will need to await an official announcement to learn the exact cost of the Steam Machine and its release date. The company has stated it will provide further updates as soon as possible.

Sony’s innovative PlayStation controller patent envisions customizable buttons

The concept focuses on comfort and accessibility, featuring layouts that can adapt to various hand sizes and play styles.

Sony has filed a new patent that envisions a PlayStation controller designed around customizable on-screen buttons. The idea replaces most fixed top-face inputs with a large touchscreen area. Instead of having a single D-pad and a cluster of face buttons, users could position touch zones where their thumbs naturally rest. They would also have the option to resize these zones or disable some when a game doesn’t require every input.

The “rapid trigger” revolution: why mechanical switches are becoming obsolete

In the past decade, "Cherry MX Red" switches were the industry standard for gaming. However, by 2026, mechanical switches will officially be outdated for competitive play. The new standard is "Hall Effect" (magnetic) technology.

Unlike mechanical switches, which need to physically contact a metal surface to register a keypress, Hall Effect switches utilize a magnet and a sensor. This allows for "Rapid Trigger": a feature where the key resets immediately upon lifting a finger, even slightly, instead of waiting for it to return past a specific point. In games like Valorant or Counter-Strike, this creates a nearly instinctual counter-strafing experience.
