Amazon is utilizing AI to reduce expenses in film and TV production.
The AI Studio at the company is developing tools to enhance pre- and post-production processes.
Amazon is working on integrating artificial intelligence more significantly into the filmmaking process for movies and TV shows, with the goal of expediting production and lowering expenses at its MGM Studio division. The company intends to implement AI tools throughout the creative process, despite Hollywood's cautious attitude towards the potential effects of this technology on jobs and industry standards.
As reported by Reuters, Albert Cheng is at the helm of a small team in what Amazon refers to as its “AI Studio,” where they are concentrating on creating proprietary tools to optimize everything from planning during pre-production to editing in post-production. Cheng stated in an interview that the primary objective of the AI Studio is to reduce costs and enhance creative workflows while ensuring that writers, directors, actors, and other creative personnel remain involved throughout the process.
Amazon plans to invite industry collaborators to participate in a closed beta test of its AI tools in March, with initial feedback anticipated by May. The company is said to be leveraging its cloud computing sector, Amazon Web Services, for support, and intends to collaborate with multiple large language model providers to offer creators a diverse array of tools for filmmaking in pre- and post-production.
The company assures that AI will not usurp creative roles.
Amazon emphasizes that it is not aiming to supplant human input with AI and that creative decisions will continue to be made by people as the tools take over more technical tasks. This initiative comes in light of the significant increase in production costs, which has made it increasingly challenging for studios to fund large projects.
The AI Studio is partnering with producer Robert Stromberg and his company Secret City, actor-producer Kunal Nayyar and his Good Karma Productions, along with former Pixar and ILM animator Colin Brady, as it evaluates new tools and investigates optimal integration methods into production.
