Crunchyroll reveals a price increase, resulting in a higher cost for your daily anime enjoyment.

The anime streaming service is increasing subscription prices for all tiers in the US.

Crunchyroll is joining the trend of rising streaming costs, as anime enthusiasts are set to feel the impact. Over the past year, the phenomenon termed “streamflation” has escalated, with several major platforms raising their subscription charges. Crunchyroll has now announced its price hike, indicating that your regular dose of anime will soon be more expensive.

In a recent blog entry, Crunchyroll stated that it will elevate subscription fees across all tiers in the US. The basic Fan tier will rise from $7.99 to $9.99 per month, while the Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan tiers will increase from $11.99 and $15.99 to $13.99 and $17.99 per month, respectively.

In conjunction with the price increase, Crunchyroll is enhancing the benefits of its base plan. Subscribers to the Fan tier will now have the ability to download shows for offline viewing on one device, a feature that was previously only available to higher-tier subscriptions. Additionally, the company has launched a special limited-time annual offer for the Fan tier at $66.99, which effectively reduces the monthly cost to $5.58 for those who pay upfront.

Here’s when the price increase begins

The new pricing will be implemented for existing US subscribers starting February 2, with the increased rates taking effect from the next billing cycle after March 4. New subscribers will see the new prices immediately. This is the first price increase for the Fan tier subscription in the US since 2019, although the Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan tiers faced increases more recently in 2024.

While the price hike from Crunchyroll might appear minimal, it could still impact viewers managing multiple streaming subscriptions. As expenses accumulate across various platforms, even small increases can significantly affect budgets over time.

In other news, Substack is now available on your TV, if that's how you prefer to enjoy content.

Substack, known as the "quiet corner" of the internet, where users can escape social media noise and engage with thoughtful writing, has made a bold move by launching a new beta TV app. The platform aims to transition from your inbox to your living room, positioning itself alongside major competitors like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube. The app, now available on Apple TV and Google TV, streams video content and livestreams from the creators you already follow, letting you view them on your largest screen. This strategic move aligns with what the tech industry calls a "lean-back" experience. Instead of straining over a laptop or smartphone screen for a forty-minute interview or lecture, you can enjoy it on your TV while handling household tasks or simply relaxing.

Lastly, if you’re considering YouTube TV, this new promotion will help you make a decision without breaking the bank.

YouTube TV is taking substantial steps to attract subscribers. Following its announcement of plans to introduce new genre-specific bundles in 2026, which will allow users to customize their subscriptions and potentially lower monthly costs, the platform is now offering new subscribers an extended trial period along with a significant discount for the initial two months. Typically, YouTube TV provides a 7-day free trial, after which subscribers pay $82.99 per month. Under this new offer, subscribers can take advantage of a 10-day free trial and only pay $59.99 per month for the first two months.
