Gemini's new ChatGPT import feature allows you to maintain context when you change between tasks.
Gemini is currently testing a beta feature that allows you to import your ChatGPT chat history, enabling you to switch assistants without losing context.
Google is piloting a feature that lets you transfer your ChatGPT chat history, so you can maintain continuity instead of starting anew. For users with extensive prompts, modifications, and decisions accumulated in previous threads, the Gemini ChatGPT import seeks to streamline the transition.
This option is referred to by Google as “import AI chats.” The process is theoretically straightforward: you export your conversations from another AI platform, upload the file, and continue your discussions in Gemini without losing the earlier context.
However, there is a built-in tradeoff. Imported chats and anything you say afterward will be saved in your Gemini activity, and this data may be utilized to enhance Google’s models. Moreover, it still lacks confirmation on fundamental aspects, such as which file formats are compatible and the extent of the beta's rollout.
File upload, not a wizard
A key detail is the location of the tool. Google’s test integrates the importer within Gemini’s attachment menu, indicating a simple upload method rather than a dedicated migration interface.
This also indicates the target audience for the feature. It is designed for individuals actively transitioning to another assistant while trying to retain the contextual information that speeds up daily usage, especially if they rely on previous threads for ongoing tasks.
Your history becomes new data
While this offers convenience, it has significant data implications. After you upload an archive, those prior messages will reside in your Gemini activity, and Google states that this content may help improve its models.
Before you transfer anything, it’s advisable to review the export and condense it. Eliminate sensitive content, personal identifiers, and anything shared solely due to it being in a private chat on another platform. Retain only what you truly need for future reference.
What to check before switching
The timing of this feature remains uncertain. The information suggests testing is ongoing, but it does not specify a release date, geographic availability, or if the rollout will occur on mobile or web first.
To prepare, export your chat history now, trim it down, and examine the Gemini activity controls on your account prior to uploading. When the option becomes available in your attachment menu, you’ll be able to carry over the desired context without importing unnecessary data.
