Sony has introduced a new concept car and announced the expected arrival date for the initial Afeela 1 vehicles.
The Afeela prototype 2026 is an SUV set to debut in the US in 2028.
Sony Honda Mobility has officially announced when the first customers will receive their Afeela 1 EV while also revealing a new concept car at its CES 2026 press conference.
The Afeela 1 was initially unveiled at CES 2023, following the joint presentation of the original Vision S concept by Sony and Honda at CES 2020.
At the time of the Afeela's introduction, Sony Honda Mobility stated it would be available in the US by 2026, and it appears they are on track to fulfill that commitment from three years ago.
Company CEO Yasuhide Mizuno confirmed that deliveries of the all-electric Afeela 1 sedan will commence in California later this year, with Japanese customers set to receive their vehicles in the first half of 2027.
This news will be welcomed by those who signed up for an Afeela several years ago, and it will be exciting to see the car on the roads. During his presentation, Mizuno also had another reveal.
The Afeela prototype 2026
The side of the stage rose, revealing the Afeela Prototype 2026, an SUV model that will enter production as early as 2028 for North America.
While the car's exterior was visible on stage, the interior details were not shared, and no specifications were provided, leaving us uncertain about the features of this new model.
We do know it's likely to include the PS Remote Play functionality of the Afeela 1, enabling users to stream games from their PS4 or PS5 and play them inside the car (provided there's a reliable internet connection).
If the prototype adopts the infotainment features of the Afeela, it should feature a large panoramic display at the front and entertainment screens in the back.
These screens can be customized and themed, allowing drivers to personalize their vehicle with animated wallpapers, apps, and more.
Further details about the SUV prototype and the new model may be revealed in the coming months, or we may have to wait until CES 2027 for the next major update.

Ford's forthcoming F-150 Lightning will remain electric, though it will require gasoline for extended range.
Ford has decided to shift the F-150 Lightning from an all-electric vehicle to a range-extended electric vehicle (EREV) capable of over 700 miles of driving range.
The company has confirmed a significant transition for its iconic F-150 Lightning pickup, as the next generation will not be a fully battery-electric vehicle (BEV) but will combine electric motors with a gasoline engine to enhance overall range.
While the EREV configuration retains electric propulsion—electric motors will continue to drive the wheels—the gasoline engine will serve as an onboard generator, recharging the battery during driving. Combined, the electric and combustion engine powertrain will provide a driving range exceeding 700 miles.
Mercedes’ CLA may be entry-level, but it is poised to change the EV landscape.
The legacy of innovation at Mercedes-Benz dates back to the invention of the automobile itself. Throughout much of that history, such innovations have often been linked to class disparities, with the brand typically debuting new technologies on its priciest models before they are introduced in more affordable options once development costs are recuperated. Now, however, the world’s oldest automaker is embracing a more inclusive approach.
Mercedes initially adhered to its traditional strategy with the EQ series, launching the EQS sedan followed by other models. However, those vehicles were not well received, prompting Mercedes to adapt. The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, the automaker's entry-level model in the U.S., is set to debut as an electric vehicle (with a hybrid option available) and will establish the technological standard for future models.
