AMD aims for your next computer to be either an AI laptop or a desktop featuring the Ryzen 7 9850X3D.
AMD has unveiled its new Ryzen AI laptop processors and the Ryzen 7 9850X3D for gaming enthusiasts, along with software enhancements designed to simplify the operation of local AI.
At CES 2026, AMD outlined two upgrade options for buyers in early 2026. One option features sleeker laptops powered by Ryzen AI 400 and Ryzen AI Max plus processors, while the other offers a high-end gaming desktop option centered around the Ryzen 7 9850X3D.
For those shopping soon, the timeline is as crucial as the specifications. AMD has stated that the first batch of Ryzen AI laptops will be available in the first quarter of 2026, with the Ryzen 7 9850X3D also expected during the same timeframe, leading to a brief waiting period for both laptop and desktop buyers.
Ryzen AI laptops are set to launch in Q1
AMD promotes the Ryzen AI 400 Series and Ryzen AI PRO 400 Series as its primary AI laptop platform, boasting up to 60 TOPS of NPU performance, up to 12 CPU cores, and integrated Radeon 800M graphics. AMD indicates that original equipment manufacturer (OEM) systems will begin shipping in Q1 2026.
For premium offerings, AMD revealed the Ryzen AI Max plus 392 and 388. These components are designed for ultra-thin laptops and compact systems, seeking enhanced integrated graphics and a unified memory structure. AMD claims that the initial systems featuring these Max plus chips will also debut in Q1 2026, with additional models anticipated later in 2026.
Ryzen 7 9850X3D takes center stage for desktops
For gamers, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D is a standout product. AMD describes it as the latest and fastest chip within the Ryzen 9000X3D series, built on the Zen 5 architecture and utilizing second-generation 3D V Cache.
AMD specifies eight cores and 16 threads, with a boost frequency reaching up to 5.6GHz, a total cache of 104MB, and a TDP of 120W. The company also claims that it can deliver up to 27 percent improved gaming performance compared to the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K. Availability for this chip is expected to begin in Q1 2026.
Software support enhances the user experience
The accompanying software is designed to streamline the setup process once the new hardware is released. AMD states that ROCm now supports Ryzen AI 400 processors, and ROCm 7.2 broadens compatibility for both Windows and Linux, offering easier access to new PyTorch builds through AMD software on Windows. Additionally, ROCm can be installed via an integrated download through ComfyUI or by using AMD Auto Detect.
On the gaming front, AMD highlights the Adrenalin Edition 25.12.1 and FSR Redstone features, which leverage machine learning for upscaling and frame generation. The next step is to look for concrete laptop configurations and pricing, as well as to compare independent benchmarks before deciding between an AI-centric laptop and an X3D desktop setup.

I found an app that can prevent low-battery mishaps on MacBooks
Are you willing to risk it? Consider this app as a safety suit for your risky lifestyle.
I've lost count of how often my laptop has run out of power during work. At times, I’ve missed the low battery notification; other times, I’ve simply forgotten to connect the charger after seeing the alert. In a recent situation, I was working with only 7% battery while comfortably resting on a bean bag, thinking I could finish my current task before fetching the power bank. I misjudged my pace, and my MacBook Air shut down mid-task, but thankfully, cloud sync preserved my work progress.
