NotebookLM may soon transform your study notes into classroom lectures.
Transforming study notes into audio content
Google's NotebookLM is testing a feature that could enhance the studying experience, making it more akin to being in a classroom. The newly introduced Lecture mode can convert your uploaded notes, documents, and resources into extended spoken lectures (according to Testing Catalog).
This feature allows NotebookLM to present the material verbally rather than just summarizing it on a screen. Unlike the shorter Audio Overviews that users are accustomed to, this new mode aims to deliver a single, uninterrupted lecture from one AI narrator.
BREAKING 🚨: Google is potentially developing a “Lecture” format for Audio Overviews on NotebookLM. These lectures would feature a single host narration and could extend up to 30 minutes. When using the Long length option, the lecture can last nearly 30 minutes, simulating the structure of an actual classroom session rather than just a brief summary. This format aims to calmly explain concepts and link ideas from your sources, making it easier to digest complex material without the need for continuous reading.
Converting research into audio lessons
The Lecture option is available alongside current Audio Overview formats like Brief, Deep Dive, Critique, and Debate. The process remains straightforward: select your sources, designate Lecture as the format, choose a length, and generate the audio.
NotebookLM recently teased new narration voices, including British English accents expected in 2026, with early hints appearing in featured notebooks.
Before taking a much-needed break for the holidays, we wanted to inquire… Did anyone catch the easter egg in our latest Featured Notebook? No? Here’s a little snippet: (We hope you’re absolutely delighted! Coming soon in 2026.) pic.twitter.com/df0vqJFX85— NotebookLM (@NotebookLM) December 22, 2025
A language selection feature has also been discovered in an APK teardown, suggesting that users may eventually have the option to select the language for the lecture.
Google has not yet confirmed when the Lecture mode will be publicly available, which languages will be included, or if access will vary by region or account type.

Whenever this mode launches, it will be beneficial for students, researchers, and professionals seeking a hands-free method to review large volumes of information. It could assist with exam preparation, familiarization before meetings, or listening to internal documents during commutes.
Although Lecture mode is still in testing, it indicates Google’s increasing interest in transforming NotebookLM into a more passive learning tool.
The company has been enhancing its features by allowing users to ask Gemini questions directly about their NotebookLM notes and streamlining the process of exporting content to Docs and Sheets. With the addition of flashcards and quizzes, NotebookLM is gradually evolving into a comprehensive study companion rather than merely a research assistant.
