Gemini may soon be able to perform tasks in the background without taking over your screen.

You may soon be able to switch between apps without restarting your tasks.

Currently, using the Gemini overlay on Android presents a significant limitation that disrupts multitasking. When you activate Gemini by saying the hotword or by long-pressing the power button, the assistant appears over the app you’re using.

However, unlike a typical overlay, it doesn’t function as one. The moment you tap on the background to access another app, Gemini shuts down completely. When you reactivate it, the conversation is lost, forcing you to restart your query, which can be frustrating for longer or more complex tasks.

Google is reportedly working on a solution to this issue. According to Android Authority, the latest beta version of the Google app suggests that the Gemini overlay is being revamped so it won't close when you switch apps.

Instead of disappearing, the overlay would minimize into a small floating action button that remains visible on the screen, allowing Gemini to continue operating while you engage with other applications.

How the floating Gemini button alters the experience

This new method enables Gemini to operate in the background while you work in other apps. You can initiate a query, switch to a different app while Gemini processes your request, and then return to the same conversation by tapping the floating button when the response is ready.

This feature allows for easy navigation, adding context from various apps, and refining your request without having to restart the session each time. When you’re finished, you can simply swipe to close Gemini.

This feature is still in beta testing and not yet available to the public, so it may undergo changes. However, if it launches as planned, this update would resolve one of the most frustrating aspects of the Gemini overlay and allow it to perform background tasks as users anticipate.

Additionally, this update aligns with Google’s broader initiative to enhance Gemini's speed and utility across Android. The company recently unveiled Gemini 3 Flash, a streamlined model intended to expedite AI Search and improve image generation.

Google is also extending its Deep Research AI beyond its own applications, through an API available in third-party apps. All these developments come ahead of a significant transition, with Google confirming that Gemini will completely replace Assistant on smartphones by 2026.
