In an independent test, the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold exhibited hinge fatigue after 144,000 folds.
A real-world fold test indicates that the hinges of the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold start to weaken after about 144,000 folds, which is significantly less than the claimed 200,000 folds, although the display remains intact.
Samsung's latest triple-folding smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, has ignited a new discussion regarding the durability of foldable devices. A South Korean YouTube channel recently conducted a rigorous "stress test," exceeding the phone’s limitations. Since its launch last month, the intricate dual-hinge design has raised doubts among consumers, and while Samsung asserts that the phone is designed for longevity, this independent evaluation provides a more realistic and slightly alarming insight into its durability over time.
Stress Test Reveals Early Issues
The YouTube channel OMG_electronics executed an automated folding test over eight consecutive days, continuously folding and unfolding the TriFold. According to Droid-Life's summary, issues began to arise early in the test. The first hinge started to emit audible creaks at merely 61,000 folds, followed by the second hinge at 121,000 folds. By the time the test hit 144,000 folds, the hinges had noticeably lost their “snap” and felt loose.
At this stage, the testers observed that the phone could no longer remain fully open by itself; it needed a slight push to stay flat. Fortunately, the display itself held up well, showing no dead pixels or cracks despite the hinges experiencing mechanical fatigue during the test.
This test is significant as it offers our first real glimpse into the durability of a triple-hinge system under extreme conditions. These mechanisms are much more complex than standard foldables, and that added complexity often leads to more potential points of failure.
For prospective buyers, this information offers some insight. Samsung rates the TriFold for 200,000 folds, which translates to approximately 100 folds daily over five years. Although the YouTube test does not outright refute this claim — especially given that the automated folding was much harsher than manual use — it suggests that users may begin to notice signs of wear and tear well before reaching that five-year milestone.
Looking ahead, these findings may push Samsung to reconsider their hinge design. Their Galaxy Z Fold 7 is already rated for an impressive 500,000 folds, indicating that the TriFold has room for improvement. As these three-segment devices transition from “novel concepts” to practical everyday tools, the durability of the hinge will be crucial in gaining and maintaining user trust.
Samsung’s forthcoming foldable device may offer a more tablet-like experience
The company seems to be drawing inspiration from Apple's anticipated foldable design.
Apple is predicted to unveil its first foldable iPhone next year, and recent leaks suggest it may differ significantly from Samsung's top foldable model. Instead of the tall, square-shaped display found in the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Apple may choose a shorter and wider design. Now, a new report indicates that Samsung may follow a similar path and introduce a device with a corresponding form factor next year.
As per ETNews, Samsung is preparing a "Wide Fold" to take on the iPhone Fold, reportedly featuring a 7.6-inch foldable display, comparable to the rumored 7.69-inch inner screen of the iPhone Fold. However, its cover display is expected to measure 5.4 inches, slightly larger than the iPhone Fold's 4.75-inch outer screen.

If you’re on the lookout for a new flagship smartphone and considering OnePlus' latest model, you'll be pleased to learn that the OnePlus 15 is now available for purchase in the US. It was originally unveiled in China back in October and only made its international debut over a month ago, having initially faced regulatory obstacles.
Earlier last month, OnePlus stated that they could not secure the necessary device certifications for the OnePlus 15 in time for the global launch due to delays related to the government shutdown. At that time, the company mentioned it was working diligently to complete all required documentation, ultimately receiving FCC approval late last month.

Leaks suggest that Oppo and Vivo are aiming for dominance in smartphone camera technology with significant upgrades.
After demonstrating its camera capabilities with the recently released Find X9 Pro, Oppo seems poised to elevate its offerings even further with the upcoming Find X9 Ultra. A recent leak indicates that this device could feature dual 200MP cameras, which may provide Apple and Samsung with considerable competition.
According to a recent post on Weibo, tipster Digital Chat Station revealed that the Find X9 Ultra will include a 200MP main camera that is
