Xbox extends gaming beyond consoles
Xbox is introducing cloud gaming on Amazon Fire TVs, allowing players to enjoy console-like games without needing to own an Xbox. As of this week, the Xbox app is available on select Fire TV smart TVs and streaming devices, enabling users to stream hundreds of games via the cloud using just a compatible controller and an internet connection.
The Xbox app is being launched for newer Fire TV devices, including the Fire TV 4-Series and Fire TV Omni QLED smart TVs, as well as the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. Amazon has indicated that support for additional Fire TV models is expected in the future.
This development follows Amazon's previous initiative from July of last year, when Xbox Game Pass support first became available on Fire TV streaming devices like the Fire TV Stick 4K and Fire TV Cube.
Playing Xbox games on Fire TV
After downloading the app from the Amazon Appstore, users simply need to log in with a Microsoft account that has an active Game Pass subscription to start gaming.
Every Game Pass tier includes access to cloud streaming, but the size of the game library varies by plan. The Essential plan is priced at $10/month and offers access to over 50 games. The Premium plan, costing $15, increases the library to over 200 titles. The Ultimate tier, now $30/month after an October price increase, unlocks more than 500 games and includes access to EA Play and Ubisoft+.
To play, a compatible controller is also required. Game Pass supports various options, including Xbox controllers and Sony’s DualSense and DualShock 4. The new Alexa+ integration on Fire TV adds convenience by allowing users to say, “Alexa, open the Xbox app,” to get started quickly.
The timing is noteworthy. Nvidia is set to impose a 100-hour monthly playtime limit on GeForce Now beginning in 2026, making Xbox Cloud Gaming an appealing alternative for players who prefer not to have strict playtime restrictions. This move is also part of Microsoft's broader strategy to redefine Xbox beyond traditional consoles, prioritizing cloud gaming and subscriptions.
While cloud gaming does not completely replace a dedicated console or gaming PC, it offers a convenient compromise. With a stable internet connection, a vast game library, and minimal hardware requirements, Fire TV owners can now enjoy major games without the need for additional equipment.
