OpenAI released several new personality presets with ChatGPT 5.1 last month, allowing users to personalize the primary voice and tone of the chatbot's responses. The company is now introducing additional customization options for users to refine ChatGPT’s personality further.
In a recent update on X, OpenAI announced that users can now adjust specific traits, including warmth and enthusiasm, to influence how ChatGPT communicates. Four new customization options have been added to ChatGPT’s Personalization settings, named Warmth, Enthusiasm, Headers & Lists, and Emoji.
Each of these settings can be adjusted to More, Less, or Default, enabling users to control how warm or enthusiastic ChatGPT sounds and the frequency of emojis, headers, and lists in its replies. These adjustments allow users to tailor ChatGPT into a more personalized conversational partner that aligns better with their style, mood, or workflow.
These newly introduced customization features enhance the base presets from version 5.1, such as Professional, Candid, and Quirky. While the original presets establish a general tone, the new options enable users to fine-tune specific nuances, creating a more tailored conversational experience.
Adjust ChatGPT to match your preferences
The personalization settings for ChatGPT are a direct response to user feedback, addressing concerns that the chatbot's replies felt overly formal, excessively cautious, or bland. By granting users more detailed control, OpenAI is allowing them to shape ChatGPT to feel more natural, engaging, and in line with their individual preferences.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman initially promised this feature back in October, following criticism after the release of GPT-5, which presented a more restrictive and less dynamic variant of ChatGPT compared to GPT-4o. At that time, Altman also hinted at a new adult mode that would “allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.” While the new personality settings are now implemented, the adult mode has been postponed until 2026.
