The recall of the ID. Buzz seems to have set a precedent in the automotive world.
VW
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall for nearly 5,700 ID. Buzz electric vans due to excessive space in the rear of the vehicle.
To clarify, the U.S. regulator has determined that the third-row bench seat in the ID. Buzz is intended for two occupants, equipped with two seat belts. However, the width of the seat is sufficient for three passengers, leading the NHTSA to request modifications to ensure compliance with safety standards.
It is believed that this recall pertains to all ID. Buzz vans currently operating on U.S. roads, marking what appears to be the first instance of a vehicle being recalled for this particular issue.
In the official recall document, the NHTSA states, "In the affected vehicles, the third-row rear bench was designed with two Designated Seating Positions (DSPs) and is equipped with seatbelts for only two occupants." It further notes that the seating surface width of the bench exceeds the maximum limit set by safety regulations.
“If three passengers were to use the third-row rear bench, there would not be enough seat belts for all three, which could heighten the risk of injury in a crash,” the NHTSA added.
To address this issue, VW plans to forgo adding a third seat belt and instead will install unpadded trim pieces to restrict the seating area, ensuring that only two individuals can sit comfortably in the third row.
The Volkswagen ID. Buzz made its U.S. debut in late 2024 as an appealing and functional electric vehicle for families seeking an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional minivans. It has a range of 234 miles and a starting price of $60,000.
Before its U.S. launch, Digital Trends had the opportunity to test drive the ID. Buzz in Europe, praising the vehicle enthusiastically.

Tesla reaffirms its timeline for an affordable EV despite rumors of setbacks.
Tesla has reiterated its commitment to begin manufacturing a more budget-friendly electric vehicle in the first half of 2025, sticking to the timeline despite differing reports and lingering industry doubts. During the latest earnings call, the company's executives confirmed that production preparations are complete, with the launch still scheduled for June.
This announcement follows a Reuters report, citing anonymous sources, suggesting that Tesla’s lower-cost EV—internally dubbed "E41"—might be delayed, potentially shifting the timeline to late 2025 or early 2026. According to that report, Tesla's goal of assembling up to 250,000 units of this new model is under reassessment, with adjustments in internal targets and no revised launch date in sight.
Cadillac teases upcoming Optiq-V performance EV.
Cadillac has unveiled the first official teaser images of the 2026 Optiq-V, previewing the brand's second all-electric model in the performance-oriented V-Series lineup. These images showcase subtle design enhancements and mark the initial confirmation of the new variant ahead of its full reveal later this year.
The Optiq-V builds on the standard Optiq, Cadillac’s compact electric SUV unveiled for the 2025 model year. According to the automaker, this V-Series variant will provide a more dynamic driving experience with improvements in steering, suspension, and overall agility. While detailed specifications are still limited, Cadillac’s press release emphasizes that the Optiq-V was designed for “precision” and an “exhilarating” driving experience.
Reports from CarScoops indicate that the Optiq-V could generate up to 515 horsepower through a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, significantly exceeding the base model's 300 horsepower. Teaser images reveal a diamond-pattern mesh grille, V-Series badging, and a rear spoiler, all indicative of its performance focus. Additional visual updates include redesigned bumpers, 21-inch wheels, and larger brakes.
The base Optiq, recently reviewed by Digital Trends, serves as Cadillac’s entry-level EV, sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox EV. Despite this connection, the Optiq embraces premium materials, features a curved 33-inch display, Google built-in technology, and standard dual-motor all-wheel drive. While
