Move over, Wordle: The New York Times has introduced a new puzzle game.
The New York Times has launched a new title for its Games catalog following the ongoing success of Wordle, and it's focused on math. Digits challenges players to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. You can play its beta version for free online right now.
In Digits, players need to match a target number presented to them. Given six numbers, players can add, subtract, multiply, or divide these numbers to get as close to the target as possible. Not all numbers need to be utilized, making this game a true test of math skills as players combine numbers and try to formulate the correct equations to approach the target.
Players will earn a five-star rating for matching the target number exactly, a three-star rating for being within 10 of the target, and a one-star rating for getting within 25 of the target number. Currently, there are also five different puzzles available with increasingly larger numbers. I completed today’s puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable number-centric game that should attract curious minds who appreciate puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times titles such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article announcing Digits and detailing The New York Times Games team's game development process, The Times indicates that the team will use this free beta period to identify bugs and determine if it is worthwhile to transition into a more active development phase "where the game is coded and the designs are finalized." Therefore, enjoy playing Digits while you can, as The New York Times may decide to discontinue the project if it doesn’t receive the anticipated response.
The beta version of Digits is currently available for free on The New York Times Games website.

While it was launched in 2021 and gained widespread popularity in December of that year, Wordle unexpectedly became a cultural phenomenon in early 2022 that was nearly unavoidable unless you muted certain words. It represented a rare success story in gaming, appealing to a wide audience due to its uncomplicated format.
Wordle's popularity surged just as rapidly as its user base. In late January 2022, the New York
