NYT Connections: clues and solutions for Sunday, May 4.
Connections is among the top puzzle games offered by the New York Times. The objective of the game is to classify a set of 16 words into four secret groups by discovering how the words are interconnected. The puzzle resets nightly at midnight and each iteration presents a different level of difficulty. Similar to Wordle, you can track your winning streak and compare scores with your friends.
Some days can be more challenging than others, akin to popular NYT Games such as The Mini and Strands. If you find yourself struggling with today’s puzzle, refer to our Connections tips and tricks guide for effective strategies or check the hints for today’s Connections puzzle listed below. If you're still stuck, we will provide the answers at the end.

You can access Connections on the New York Times website or via the NYT Games app available for iOS and Android devices. In Connections, you will see a grid of 16 words—your goal is to arrange these words into four sets of four by recognizing the relationships that connect them. These sets may include categories like video game franchise titles, sequel book series, shades of red, names of restaurant chains, etc.
Often, some words can fit into multiple categories, but there is only one completely correct solution. You can rearrange the grid of words and shuffle them to better visualize the possible connections.
Each group is color-coded; the yellow group is the easiest, followed by the green, blue, and purple groups. Select four words and click Submit. If you’re correct, those words will be removed from the grid, and the theme connecting them will be disclosed. An incorrect guess will count as an error. You have a total of four mistakes available before the game concludes.

Who edits the NYT Connections game?
Wyna Liu, who has been editing puzzles for The New York Times since 2020, oversees Connections on a daily basis.
“A few months ago, a new assignment crossed my desk: Create the game boards for Connections, a category matching game that had recently been greenlighted and was in search of an editor,” Liu explained in an article detailing her process in June 2024. Most of my puzzle experience has been in crosswords, and I was eager to try something new. I’ve appreciated learning how puzzle editing unfolds once a game receives the green light and understanding how our team integrates into a broader framework.”
To celebrate Connections’ one-year anniversary earlier this year, Liu shared this TikTok featuring her favorite puzzles thus far:
