NYT Connections: clues and solutions for Wednesday, April 30.

Connections is considered one of the top puzzle games created by the New York Times. The objective of the game is to categorize a set of 16 words into four secret groups by understanding their relationships. Each night at midnight, the puzzle resets, and the difficulty level varies with each new challenge. Similar to Wordle, players can track their winning streaks and compare scores with friends.

Some days can be more challenging than others, akin to other NYT Games favorites such as The Mini and Strands. If you find yourself struggling with today’s puzzle, take a look at our guide for tips and strategies, or check the hints provided below for today’s Connections puzzle. If all else fails, we’ll reveal today’s answers at the end.

      How to Play Connections

Connections is a daily game that involves identifying common links among words. Players must choose four groups of four words each without exceeding three mistakes. Play now. [Link to game]

You can access Connections via the New York Times website or the NYT Games app available on iOS or Android devices.

In Connections, you will see a grid with 16 words. Your task is to sort these words into four groups of four by discovering the connections that tie them together. These groups might include themes like video game franchise titles, book series sequels, shades of red, names of chain restaurants, and more.

While some words may seem to fit multiple themes, there is only one completely correct answer. You can shuffle the word grid and rearrange it to better visualize potential connections.

Each group is color-coded: yellow is the easiest to identify, followed by green, blue, and purple.

Select four words and click Submit. If you’re correct, those four words will disappear from the grid, and their connecting theme will be revealed. An incorrect guess counts as a mistake, and you have a total of four mistakes allowed before the game ends.

Who is responsible for editing the NYT Connections game?

Wyna Liu, who has been editing puzzles for The New York Times since 2020, edits the Connections game each day.

"A few months ago, I was assigned to create the game boards for Connections, a category-matching game that had recently been approved and was seeking an editor." Liu mentioned in an article detailing her process in June 2024. "My experience mainly revolves around crosswords, and I was thrilled with the opportunity to explore something new. I’ve enjoyed learning how puzzle editing unfolds once a game is approved and seeing how our team integrates into a larger framework."

On the one-year anniversary of Connections' launch earlier this year, Liu shared this TikTok highlighting her favorite puzzles to date:
