Apple is said to be developing two special-edition iPhones to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2027: a long-anticipated foldable model and a Pro version characterized by a unique glass-focused design, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The production may relocate to India, which could increase costs due to the need for advanced components and manufacturing methods that are challenging to duplicate outside of China, according to the report. Why it matters: The escalating trade tensions and tariffs between the US and China this year introduce uncertainty to Apple's supply chain. Moving production to India might lessen reliance on China but could also lead to higher costs and operational complexities. Details: Apple is likely looking to move some of its production to India, although Mark Gurman indicates that manufacturing costs there are 5% to 10% higher compared to China. Gurman noted that the anniversary iPhone will integrate more glass in its design, merging the frame and back into a cohesive form. This device is anticipated to present a cutting-edge appearance and mark a significant development in both aesthetics and technology.
Apple has commenced the trial production of its first foldable-screen device, with Foxconn managing the assembly and Samsung supplying the OLED screens, according to reports from Chinese media outlet Jiwei. Mass production is projected to start in the latter half of 2026, possibly launching alongside the iPhone 18 series in September. The second-generation model, likely to be the 20th anniversary edition, is expected to debut in September 2027.
According to the Jiwei report, which cites sources from Korean media outlet ETNews, Apple is reportedly investing significantly in a new material designed to eliminate crease marks on the foldable iPhone. An industry analyst mentioned to TechNode that due to the intricacies of foldable screens and glass designs, fully exiting the Chinese supply chain is challenging for Apple, with India potentially only handling final assembly.
Context: Apple’s smartphone shipments in China fell by 9% year-over-year in the first quarter, making it the only major brand to experience a decline, according to research firm IDC. Apple shipped 9.8 million units in the first quarter, resulting in a 13.7% market share, down from 17.4% in the preceding quarter. Elevated pricing constrained Apple's ability to take advantage of government subsidies in China, which favored electronics priced below 6,000 yuan (approximately $820), thereby affecting its competitive stance in the market.
