Private Space is among the standout features of Android 15.

Google has recently made a proclamation that could signal the end for many Android devices.

With the arrival of Android 15, Google has announced a significant increase in the minimum storage requirements, potentially rendering some devices obsolete.

Under the new guideline, phones and tablets will need at least 32GB of storage capacity to operate the Android OS.

In reality, even more storage will be necessary since 75% of that 32GB must be designated for the data partition.

Moreover, given that Android 15 is expected to occupy close to 16GB, it is understandable why Google has raised the minimum requirement to this new level.

Despite Google's efforts to keep its mobile OS as streamlined as possible, its size has increased to a point where there will be limited space left for applications or other content on devices with only 16GB of capacity.

As a result, the lower-end Android smartphone market will no longer be able to save costs by offering devices with reduced storage capacities.

This change comes swiftly considering that Android 13, launched in 2022, raised the minimum requirement from 8GB to 16GB. Now, only a few years later, this has doubled.

Can Google enforce the new storage requirement?

Technically, Google cannot compel manufacturers to stop creating phones with smaller storage options as long as they rely on the open-source version of Android (AOSP).

What Google can do is impose this requirement on companies wishing to sell phones equipped with its Google Mobile Service (GMS). To obtain a GMS license, a device must satisfy certain minimum criteria, including this new 32GB storage requirement.

While it may seem possible to bypass this regulation, not having a GMS license means that the device will be unable to access essential Google services such as the Google Play Store or Google Play Services.

      On the positive side

This could lead to an improved user experience for budget phones, resulting in smoother performance.

It should also allow for increased storage for apps and games on devices, which is generally a positive development.
