A leak indicates that the iPhone Fold may resemble a folding iPad mini more closely.

There has been ongoing speculation regarding Apple's potential entry into the folding device market in the near future. We previously noted the possibility of an iPhone Fold debuting in 2026, though details about the device have been scarce until now. Recent information may have clarified some aspects.

A trustworthy source has shared some insights about the anticipated display resolution, providing more information about the device. Digital Chat Station (via Android Authority) has reported that the internal display will feature a resolution of 2713 x 1920 pixels, while the external display will have a resolution of 2088 x 1422 pixels. The internal display is expected to measure 7.76 inches, and the external display will be 5.49 inches.

This results in a 13:9 aspect ratio for both displays, with the internal display oriented in landscape mode and the external display in portrait mode. Once unfolded, the internal display will resemble the iPad mini more than any existing iPhone, as the iPad mini has a 14:9 aspect ratio and measures 8.3 inches.

Despite being smaller diagonally, the iPhone Fold will boast a significantly higher resolution compared to existing devices. If these specifications are accurate, this device will offer a resolution greater than any iPad currently available from Apple.

Analyzing the rumored display specifications reveals a pixel density of 428ppi for the internal display and 460ppi for the external display. The iPhone 16 also has a pixel density of 460ppi, indicating good consistency; however, the iPad mini features a pixel density of 326ppi, while all other iPad models have 264ppi.

To illustrate these display comparisons, I have created an image showing the aspect ratios of both screens for better visualization.

Additionally, the external display's width is notable. Current iPhone models utilize a 20:9 aspect ratio, which is relatively tall, but this leak suggests the iPhone Fold will have a shorter, wider display. This has been a challenge for manufacturers of folding phones, with early Samsung models implementing a narrow 23.1:9 display, while the Pixel Fold featured a 17:9 external display.

Consumers found the Samsung display too narrow, while the Pixel Fold was seen as wide yet somewhat squat. Based on the current details, the iPhone Fold appears to be even more compressed. How Apple plans to adjust the user interface and the resulting user experience is still uncertain.

Furthermore, it is reported that Apple may incorporate an under-display camera for the internal screen, marking the first use of this technology by the company, commonly seen in Samsung’s folding devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

From a design perspective, an under-display camera is advantageous since it avoids needing notches to house the camera. However, the image quality tends to be lower and the display may experience some disruption. It’s likely that this camera will function as a FaceTime camera rather than for taking selfies.

This development raises questions about how Apple will manage unlocking the device. Given that this will be a premium device (which is beyond doubt), expectations for Face ID are high. It remains uncertain whether an under-display system could accommodate this, as it requires a dot projector, infrared camera, and infrared illuminator to operate effectively.

In summary, we have received display specifications from a credible source, indicating a book-style folding device that unfolds to reveal a display similar to that of the iPad mini. The outcome may result in a high-quality internal display paired with a short and wide external display.
