Subaru is finally making strides in the electric vehicle sector. The automaker is teasing the 2026 Trailseeker, a brand-new electric SUV set to be unveiled at the New York International Auto Show next week. Although details are limited, the Trailseeker represents Subaru’s long-anticipated second foray into the electric vehicle market, alongside the Solterra — and the expectations are quite high.

The teaser image only reveals a glimpse of the Trailseeker’s rear badge and taillight, but its name suggests a focus on ruggedness, reflecting Subaru’s outdoor heritage. However, in the electric vehicle realm, the outdoor segment has been dominated by brands like Rivian, whose upcoming R2 compact SUV has already attracted attention. The Trailseeker presents Subaru with the opportunity to reaffirm its identity in this electric era.

Presently, Subaru’s only electric vehicle is the Solterra, a collaboration with Toyota that shares its platform with the bZ4X. While the Solterra captures some key Subaru features — all-wheel drive, spaciousness, and off-road prowess — it falls short in several crucial EV aspects. Critics have noted its limited 225-mile range, slow 100kW charging capability, and lackluster acceleration when compared to competitors like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Ford Mustang Mach-E.

There are hopes that Subaru has taken these critiques into account and is ready to introduce a more competitive model. The Trailseeker could either be a variation of an upcoming Toyota electric vehicle (possibly the next-generation C-HR+), or an entirely new offering based on the shared platform strategy. Subaru had previously announced its intention to co-develop its next three electric vehicles with Toyota, before launching four in-house EVs by 2028.

Given the time Subaru has taken to broaden its electric vehicle lineup, the Trailseeker must make an impact. It’s not merely about adding a second electric model — it’s essential to keep up with a market that is quickly advancing beyond traditional automakers. If the Trailseeker can address the shortcomings of the Solterra and embody that classic Subaru ruggedness within a genuinely modern electric vehicle, it could provide the momentum the brand needs.
