After a two-year break, The Last of Us makes a triumphant return with its second season on Sunday night.
The premiere of season 2, episode 1, titled Future Days, will take place at 9 p.m. ET/PT on April 13. The episode will be broadcast on HBO and available for streaming on Max. This season will consist of seven episodes released weekly on Sunday nights, concluding with the finale on May 25.
Season 2 will adapt The Last of Us Part II, the second installment of the video game series by Naughty Dog for PlayStation. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey reprise their Emmy-nominated roles as Joel and Ellie. According to HBO, five years after the events of season 1, “Joel and Ellie find themselves in conflict with each other and a world that is even more dangerous and unpredictable than before.” Joel’s choice to save Ellie in season 1 has altered the course of humanity and will significantly impact the storyline of season 2.
The returning cast for season 2 includes Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Joel’s younger brother, and Rutina Wesley as Maria, Tommy’s wife and co-leader of the Jackson community.
The most significant new addition to the season 2 cast is Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, a woman on a quest for revenge over the loss of a loved one. Other newcomers include Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Catherine O’Hara will also make a guest appearance.
Season 1 of The Last of Us became a phenomenal success for HBO, achieving the second-largest debut since 2010, following House of the Dragon. The trailer for season 2 amassed 158 million views globally across various platforms within its first three days, making it HBO and Max Original’s most-watched trailer during that timeframe.
Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are the writers and executive producers of The Last of Us. HBO has already confirmed the renewal of the hit series for a third season.
