3 overlooked (HBO) Max films you should check out this weekend (March 7-9)

Max is set to take a darker turn with the arrival of Heretic on March 7. When two Mormon missionaries, portrayed by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East, visit Mr. Reed’s (Hugh Grant) home, they find themselves ensnared in a maze that will challenge their beliefs. This thrilling horror film from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods provides a fantastic showcase for Grant, who revels in his role as a self-absorbed antagonist.

If you’ve already viewed Heretic or are seeking other options, Max offers numerous avenues to explore. One such option includes overlooked films. Luckily, we have some suggestions, featuring an ensemble romantic comedy, a poignant sports biopic, and an enlightening drama from a recent Oscar winner.

We also provide recommendations for the best films on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Max, and Disney+.

He’s Just Not That Into You (2009)

      Warner Bros. Pictures

Sadly for fans of romance, ensemble romantic comedies seem to be a relic of the past. These films were an excellent way to gather a cast of well-known and good-looking actors in one production. These light-hearted movies are ideal for escapism. Today’s selection is He’s Just Not That Into You, featuring a star-studded cast that includes Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Ginnifer Goodwin, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly, Kevin Connolly, Justin Long, Scarlett Johansson, and Bradley Cooper.

Set in Baltimore, He’s Just Not That Into You explores the romantic lives and dating experiences of nine individuals. The notable characters feature Gigi (Goodwin), who often misinterprets romantic interactions; Janine (Connelly), who suspects her husband (Cooper) of dishonesty; and Mary (Barrymore), whose dating experiences lead nowhere. While not every plotline is flawless, there is enough allure and romance to keep viewers engaged.

      The Iron Claw (2023)

      A24

Every Academy member owes Zac Efron an apology for not acknowledging his performance in The Iron Claw, a film that is both uplifting and heart-wrenching. Directed by Sean Durkin, this sports biopic chronicles the legacy of the Von Erich family, renowned wrestlers of the 1980s. Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany), the proprietor of WCWW wrestling, is married to Doris (Maura Tierney).

The couple has five sons: Kevin (Efron), David (Harris Dickinson), Kerry (Jeremy Allen White), and Mike (Stanley Simons). The tragic death of their eldest son, Jack Jr., during childhood leads the family to believe they are cursed. As the boys achieve fame in wrestling, their rise ultimately leads to a tragic fall. Efron’s poignant performance deserves recognition come the 2024 Oscars.

      The Florida Project (2017)

      A24

Sean Baker is enjoying the success of Anora, the independent film about a Brooklyn sex worker marrying the son of a Russian oligarch, which won five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing for Baker. With Baker's rising popularity, this is a great opportunity to revisit some of his earlier works, like The Florida Project.

The irony of The Florida Project lies in its depiction of children living in poverty near the enchantment of Disney World. Six-year-old Moonee (Brooklynn Kimberly Prince) resides with her unemployed mother (Bria Vinaite) in a budget motel just minutes from Disney. Moonee often finds herself in trouble with her friends, but fortunately, the compassionate motel manager (Willem Dafoe) gives her some leeway. The Florida Project offers a compassionate glimpse into a lesser-seen aspect of America, culminating in a powerful ending.
