Instagram may soon become even more hectic with the introduction of Community Chats.

Meta is working to transform its social applications into a central hub for diverse content and conversations. The next move towards this goal may involve Community Chats on Instagram, which could enable group discussions similar to those found in Telegram channels and Discord.

Code investigator Alessandro Paluzzi has revealed some visual elements of this upcoming feature, outlining how it might function. These chat groups will accommodate up to 250 participants simultaneously and will be accessible for all users to join and communicate within the community.

However, it won't be an unrestricted chat environment. Community Chats will empower creators to appoint moderators who can oversee the discussions. These moderators will have the authority to delete messages that breach community standards and can also remove members if necessary.

Moreover, Instagram will monitor these community chats to ensure compliance with its content policies. The specific disciplinary measures that might be taken against not only individual members but also against the community chats themselves remain unclear.

Once a community chat is created, the creator can choose to restrict access so that only approved users can join. Additionally, similar to broadcast channels, users will have the ability to promote their Community Chats on their profile and channel pages.

At present, the only community-oriented feature available on Instagram is the broadcast channels, aimed mainly at creators and influencers. These channels facilitate the posting of content updates in text, video, and image formats.

To enhance engagement, features like polls and questions are included. There is also an option to invite another creator for live updates as a guest within the broadcast channel. Exclusive channels can be formed for subscribers, but it’s important to note that broadcast channels are restricted to Professional accounts.

The sole limitation is that, apart from interacting with polls or questions, members cannot post their own content. This is where Community Chats become valuable, permitting fans and followers to express their opinions like they would in a Telegram channel or Discord community.

The primary challenge will be moderation. Meta has relaxed certain content moderation policies, especially regarding sensitive issues such as LGBTQ discussions, which has drawn criticism from experts since these changes occurred.

Enforcing moderation policies will be challenging and will require diligent oversight from community participants to maintain order in the community chat. Another concern is the potential for problematic discussions to proliferate within community chats, particularly those that operate on an invitation-only basis.

Meta has faced significant criticism for permitting hateful content that incites violence and other harmful messages across Facebook and Instagram, even with such material being publicly accessible. It will be interesting to see if Instagram can manage to prevent Community Chats from descending into chaos.
