The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra might be the most impressive electric vehicle available at the moment.
Xiaomi unveiled the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra merely days ago, and the company is already showcasing this high-speed new electric vehicle to the public. In fact, I had the opportunity to view it in person at MWC 2025.
What a striking car it is. The SU7 Ultra is essentially a supercar iteration of the standard Xiaomi SU7, which is already an impressive model in its own right. It all begins with the design; the standard SU7 features a modern, aerodynamic look, drawing design inspirations from vehicles like the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S. It is a four-door sedan, and although the second row isn't the most spacious, it is definitely comparable to other sedans in its class. The SU7 Ultra elevates the premium aesthetic further, giving the car a rally-inspired appearance. The model I saw was in a vibrant yellow hue with black carbon fiber details, including a large rear spoiler. It looked even better in person than in pictures.
What truly stands out, however, is its performance. The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under two seconds, an incredibly rapid feat. It is powered by two Xiaomi V8 electric motors and one Xiaomi V6 motor, generating an impressive 1,527 horsepower combined. When it's time to decelerate, the car boasts 430-millimeter carbon fiber ceramic brake discs to aid stopping.
While I didn't get to sit inside the car, the interior basics are reminiscent of the standard SU7. It accommodates five people (including the driver) and features a large infotainment display at the front, serving as the main control for much of the driving experience, much like a Tesla. I haven't personally tested the software, but reports suggest it is modern and user-friendly, easily surpassing traditional automakers and competing well with brands like Tesla and Rivian.
This vehicle exemplifies the remarkable advancements made by Chinese electric vehicles, yet we still can’t purchase them in the U.S. Given the geopolitical dynamics, it appears increasingly unlikely that this situation will change, which is unfortunate. More competition in the U.S. market, particularly in the affordable yet premium electric car segment, would be beneficial. While we certainly don’t wish for American companies like Ford to go out of business, increased competition could encourage them to improve and create better and more affordable EVs, which would benefit everyone involved.
That said, I’m not suggesting that the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is inexpensive. The new Ultra variant starts at a relatively steep 529,900 yuan, roughly translating to around $73,000. This is more than double the base price of the standard Xiaomi SU7, which costs 215,900 yuan, or approximately $30,000. However, the SU7 Ultra is designed for those seeking top-tier performance, and considering the U.S. EV market, where decent electric vehicles typically start at around $40,000, the base price of the standard SU7 is noteworthy.
Additionally, neither the standard SU7 nor the SU7 Ultra is available in the U.S., and while Xiaomi has expressed a desire to change that, it seems improbable at this time. In the interim, one can only hope that the EV manufacturers present in the U.S. recognize the need for improvement and rise to the occasion.
