However, New York City officials are hesitant regarding its use among younger students. According to ABC News, New York City Public Schools will implement a comprehensive ban on generative AI for students in pre-K through eighth grade starting in the 2026-2027 academic year. This policy will impact over half a million students when the new school year commences next week.
The district intends to eliminate software with AI features meant for students and to forbid the use of AI companion chatbots. High school students will not be affected by this restriction, marking an effort to delineate the appropriate age for AI usage. Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that the district will spend the upcoming year examining how generative AI influences students before making further decisions. "The tech industry wants us to believe that AI-driven early education is not just unavoidable, but essential," Mamdani expressed in a statement to ABC News. "We do not share that perspective."
New York is wary of early AI dependency among children
The concern extends beyond simply students asking a chatbot to complete their assignments. City leaders aim for younger students to sharpen critical skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and communication without immediately resorting to generative AI for assistance. Schools are also being urged to foster stronger relationships between students and teachers rather than introducing another technological tool in the classroom.

New York City Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels emphasized that the city does not believe that innovation necessitates increasing technology in front of students. This decision follows a significant restriction implemented last year: a policy regulating cellphone use that limits students' access throughout the school day. AI will not be entirely absent in high school either. The district plans to offer AI literacy courses twice a year to teach high schoolers to approach the technology critically before becoming overly reliant on it.

New York City's stance reflects a broader debate within the education sector. While the city is removing AI from the hands of younger students, the White House encourages educators to responsibly integrate the technology into classrooms. The Department of Health and Human Services recently convened childhood experts to address issues related to excessive screen time, while officials have called for stronger protections concerning both social media and AI. Rather than determining the appropriate level of AI usage for younger students, the nation's largest school district is opting for a complete exclusion, at least for the coming year, to assess whether classrooms benefit from keeping AI out altogether.

AI may be becoming increasingly prevalent in workplaces, but Meta employees will no longer need to demonstrate an overwhelming enthusiasm for its use. According to a new report from WIRED, Meta has altered its performance review policies to eliminate evaluations based on AI tool usage. The updated guidelines shift the focus away from AI engagement and return to assessing the actual impact of an employee's work.
While this may seem straightforward, the difference is significant. Last year, Meta informed employees that “AI-driven impact” would be factored into performance evaluations, which encouraged them to integrate chatbots and AI technology into their daily responsibilities. Employees could receive labels such as “AI Native,” “AI First,” or “AI Enabled” based on their level of technology adoption. According to some workers, this led to a work environment where the act of utilizing AI became a goal in itself.
