In a conversation with Tom’s Guide, Gurman indicated that all the information he has received suggests MagSafe will be included in the foldable iPhone. His rationale is straightforward: Apple has already integrated MagSafe into the super-slim iPhone Air, so there’s no reason it couldn’t do the same with the Ultra.
This is an intriguing development, as previous leaks and images of the foldable did not seem to depict a MagSafe ring on the rear panel. Considering the iPhone Ultra is rumored to be quite thin, with reports suggesting a thickness of just 4.5mm when unfolded—thinner than the iPhone Air’s 5.6mm frame—it was reasonable to think that Apple might omit MagSafe to conserve space. Gurman’s comments imply otherwise.
Why would MagSafe on a foldable be significant?
If Apple can achieve this, it would provide a notable edge over Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra, which require a case for magnetic wireless charging. The ability to attach a charger or accessory directly to a folding phone without added bulk is a convenience that could entice consumers to choose Apple.
MagSafe is just one component of a larger scheme. Leaked images also suggest a titanium body, an “over-engineered” hinge designed for a nearly creaseless display, and a more compact camera configuration.
Apple is also anticipated to introduce split-screen multitasking on iOS, reportedly exclusive to this foldable. Furthermore, with a price tag expected to exceed $2,000, MagSafe support feels like a small yet genuinely positive piece of news for those already saving up.
