The Gemini Notebook now allows you to cite books and convert them into various formats.

      To add books as a source in Gemini Notebook, you must own them through Google Play Books.

      Gemini Notebook, previously known as NotebookLM, is introducing a new feature that allows you to directly access and reference information from the books you own. Google has aptly named this feature Expert Intelligence, and its purpose is straightforward. Instead of relying solely on the sources you upload or retrieve from the internet, you can now also tap into knowledge from the digital books you have purchased.

      It is important to note that you need to have purchased the book from the Google Play Books library. Currently, Google is offering one free book to U.S. users as part of the launch campaign, although this offer is available “while supplies last.” As of now, Expert Intelligence is exclusive to the Gemini Notebook app and its web dashboard, but Google indicates that it will also be integrated into the core Gemini app and AI mode in Search in the future.

      The primary concept behind Expert Intelligence is to merge the existing capabilities of Gemini with insights gleaned from your favorite books. For instance, if you ask Gemini to generate a meal plan focusing on chicken and spinach, you can request the AI assistant to fetch relevant recipes from a cookbook by Martha Stewart that you possess. These books can serve as sources for creating Infographics, Audio Overviews, Quizzes, and other formats.

      Expert Intelligence has been made available starting today and includes works published by major names such as Bloomsbury, De Gruyter Brill, Johns Hopkins University Press, Macmillan Publishers, O’Reilly Media, and Penguin Random House, encompassing over 100,000 titles.

      Google has also collaborated with a selection of authors to create Featured Notebooks, which provide extra insights beyond their books. While this feature is engaging, it's not entirely unrestricted. For instance, if you set up a shared Gemini notebook, others who access it must also own or purchase a copy of the book to fully utilize Expert Intelligence.
