South Korea is providing free AI services to assist citizens with booking appointments, filing taxes, and handling daily tasks.

      While the world grapples with discussions on AI regulation, South Korea is instead offering free AI subscriptions.

      South Korea aims to make access to artificial intelligence as straightforward as accessing electricity or public transport. Rather than confining premium AI tools behind a paywall, the government intends to fund them, providing every citizen free access through a new initiative dubbed 'AI for All'.

      According to the Wall Street Journal, the initiative is designed to enhance the use of locally developed AI chatbots and decrease the country’s reliance on models created in the US and China.

      ‘AI for All’ seeks to provide premium chatbots to everyone

      The AI tools will extend beyond merely answering inquiries. They will integrate with government services, enabling individuals to schedule medical appointments, receive tax assistance, search for housing, and utilize various other public services through AI.

      Small businesses can leverage free AI for tax filing and to check their eligibility for government aid programs, while parents can obtain recommendations for educational materials for their children. Additionally, citizens will have unlimited AI access for learning purposes.

      The plan also emphasizes AI independence

      The government states that this initiative forms part of their strategy for AI sovereignty. By offering domestic AI services for free, officials hope to lessen reliance on American and Chinese platforms. To facilitate this endeavor, the government will supply selected providers with up to 512 Nvidia B200 AI chips and assist with operational expenses, although the total budget for the initiative remains undisclosed.

      This initiative highlights the substantial size of the market. Over 20 million South Koreans currently use free generative AI tools, with around one in four individuals paying for AI services. The government has also increased its AI budget for 2026 to approximately $7.2 billion, indicating that it considers AI to be critical national infrastructure rather than just another technological trend.

      South Korea’s strategy also contrasts with efforts in the US, where free premium AI access has primarily been available to specific demographics, such as students through programs like Google’s free AI Pro for students, rather than being accessible to the entire population.
