Google is taking action against Android applications that consume excessive memory due to a RAM shortage driven by AI developments.

Google establishes new memory guidelines for Android apps by 2027.

As RAM costs rise, Google isn't delaying action. The company has introduced new memory regulations for Android applications available on the Play Store, giving developers a firm deadline to optimize their code. With increasing prices, consumers are leaning towards devices with lower specifications, and applications that consume excessive memory can degrade the experience for users.

What changes are being implemented for developers?

      Google

Beginning in February 2027, applications will need to adhere to new memory standards across three key areas:

      1. Dynamic memory usage measures the amount of private data storage an app uses while it is active or running in the background.

      2. Bitmap memory assesses the space occupied by images and graphics since apps should not retain that memory when not visible.

      3. DEX code optimization reduces app code size, allowing for faster operation and lower overall memory usage.

Google will provide new tools in the Play Console to assist developers in identifying inflated code early. While apps that exceed these thresholds won't be removed from the store, they will encounter limited visibility and publishing options on the Play Store.

An added advantage for those switching devices

Also included in this announcement is a benefit for users transitioning to new phones. The Zero-Tap Sign-In feature allows apps to automatically restore your login credentials when you set up a new Android device, eliminating the need to re-enter passwords for each app after upgrading.

This regulation will take effect by April 2027. Although games are currently exempt, Google indicates that specific guidance for game sign-ins will be released in 2027. Notably, Google has already reduced RAM in its Pixel 11 Pro series, decreasing from 16GB to 12GB, reflecting the industry's serious challenges with RAM shortages.

Additionally, Android users can anticipate another positive development. Android 17 will introduce a new privacy feature aimed at preventing ISPs from tracking users' website and app visits, addressing a gap that has persisted since the early days of encrypted browsing.

iPhone 18 series: What we know so far

Apple has officially announced the date for the September event, although details about the devices remain undisclosed.

Apple's iPhone is a product that captures the attention of the world, including potential buyers, critics, and competitors. Over the years, the company has consistently revealed the latest version of its smartphone technology every September, showcasing various Pro and non-Pro models. However, the iPhone 18 series may break that tradition.

This year might mark the first instance where the company divides its significant September event into two parts, spotlighting different categories of upcoming iPhones. The premium models, which include the Pro versions and the rumored Apple foldable, are expected to launch this fall (with the date finally confirmed), while the more affordable devices might be introduced in spring 2027. Hence, it is crucial to stay informed about the anticipated iPhone 18 series this year to effectively plan for an upgrade (and budget accordingly).

Two-stage AI technique could finally resolve low-light challenges for smartphone cameras

New two-stage AI system enhances low-light photos while preserving intricate details

Smartphone cameras have significantly improved at capturing details in challenging conditions, yet darkness remains a common adversary. In low-light situations, even high-end devices can yield grainy photos, obscure shadows, and blurred fine details. A new AI-based image enhancement method shows promise for improvement.

Researchers from Wuhan University in China have created LL-Refiner, a two-stage machine-learning system aimed at enhancing ultra-high-definition images taken in low light without compromising the subtle details that lend photographs a natural appearance. This work was reported by Tech Xplore and published in the IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica on July 3, 2026.

Do you really need three 200-megapixel cameras on your phone? Oppo thinks you will.

A recent leak hints that the upcoming flagship may feature 200MP sensors across its main, telephoto, and ultrawide cameras.

The competition in megapixels shows no signs of slowing down. After Oppo and Vivo each integrated two 200MP cameras in their latest Ultra flagships, Oppo seems poised to take it a step further. According to leaker Digital Chat Station, the forthcoming Find X10 Pro Max could be equipped with three 200MP sensors spanning its primary, telephoto, and ultrawide cameras. If accurate, this would position Oppo as the first smartphone manufacturer to incorporate such pixel density in an ultrawide camera.

What a 200MP ultrawide camera could achieve.
