Apple is preparing to surprise the market with the first foldable iPhone.
On September 9, Apple will hold a presentation of new devices, where it may showcase a foldable model for the first time. The release of the gadget could strengthen the company's position in the premium segment and accelerate the development of the foldable smartphone market. Apple will hold its next presentation on September 9. It is expected that the company will introduce a new generation of iPhones and possibly the long-awaited foldable smartphone.
The first foldable iPhone could become an important milestone for Apple. According to analysts, premium segment devices could become a key factor in increasing the average selling price and profitability of the company.
The upcoming presentation will also be the first major event for Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus. He will take office on September 1, while Tim Cook will transition to the role of executive chairman of the board. Ternus's appointment was announced in April. This personnel move was widely seen as a sign that Apple intends to refocus on its core strength—device development.
Currently, Samsung Electronics leads in the small but growing segment of foldable smartphones. Manufacturers hope that over time, such devices will become mainstream, despite their high cost.
Foldable models could become one of the most promising directions for consumer electronics manufacturers facing a serious shortage of memory chips and storage devices. The component shortage has led to rising prices and negatively impacted overall consumer demand.
Apple has also raised prices on Mac computers and iPad tablets to offset increased costs. In July, the company reported "very significant" supply issues and warned that they could hinder sales in the current quarter.
Analysts expect the foldable iPhone to feature a screen comparable in size to the iPad mini display. Earlier this year, Samsung introduced a new foldable smartphone the size of a passport. Thus, the South Korean tech giant aims to maintain its position amid the upcoming competition with Apple.
According to IDC, by 2027, Apple could ship more than 17 million foldable iPhones to the market.
Apple's entry into this segment is also seen as an important factor for its further growth. IDC forecasts that foldable smartphone shipments will increase by 12.6% this year. In comparison, global smartphone shipments overall are expected to decline by a record 16.7%.
