Google is significantly enhancing Gemini Live by introducing Deep Research. This feature is launching today for all users of the Gemini app, allowing you to initiate a comprehensive research task through a voice conversation and return later to review the completed report.
Deep Research has been part of Gemini for a while. Rather than just providing a quick response, Gemini can explore numerous sources, pursue useful leads, and compile a much more elaborate report with citations. Although this process may take several minutes, there's no need to keep Gemini open while it is working. Once the research is complete, you'll receive a notification.
Deep Research offers far more than a standard Gemini inquiry.
Many services now feature a Deep Research tool. ChatGPT and Claude have one, and Gemini has had its own version available for some time. Instead of giving a brief answer, Gemini scans across various sources, follows pertinent leads, and assembles a detailed report complete with citations. It can also handle uploaded files and draw information from connected Google services like Gmail and Drive.

The process may take some time, making it more suitable for inquiries that require thorough investigation rather than those needing immediate answers. You won’t need to stay in front of your device; Gemini can operate in the background and notify you once the report is ready.
Users can alternate between speaking and typing without starting anew.
The integration of Gemini Live allows the Deep Research report to remain contextual when users switch between voice and text. For instance, you could initiate a research inquiry through Live, put your phone away while Gemini completes the task, and later return to discuss the results verbally. You can also switch to typing for a follow-up question or to refine parts of the report without starting a new conversation.
Google announced this feature as part of a broader back-to-school update that also introduces a student hub, study notebooks, and interactive visualizations. However, Deep Research in Gemini Live is available to all users of the Gemini app, not just students.

Windows 11 is discontinuing the Drag Tray feature.
Windows 11's frustrating Drag Tray feature is finally being removed.
Microsoft is discontinuing one of Windows 11's more unconventional file-sharing experiments after users expressed that the feature was often more bothersome than beneficial. The Drag Tray was designed to provide a faster method of sharing files. You could click and drag a file in File Explorer towards the top of the screen, where a floating panel would appear with shortcuts for sending it to various applications. This premise seemed straightforward, but many users were already dragging files to that area of the screen for completely different purposes.

OpenAI aims to monitor AI misuse without requiring customers to relinquish their data.
Its new Private Safety Processing system takes a different stance compared to Anthropic, which mandates 30-day retention for certain advanced models.
OpenAI seeks to improve its ability to identify abuse of its advanced AI models without pressuring privacy-conscious customers to forfeit Zero Data Retention. In an announcement on August 19, OpenAI introduced Private Safety Processing, a system designed to detect suspicious behavior across multiple interactions while maintaining ZDR for eligible API customers.
OpenAI states that its current ZDR safeguards assess requests one at a time, making it challenging to recognize patterns across various interactions. Private Safety Processing is intended to address this issue without providing OpenAI employees access to the underlying prompts or responses.

Google is offering students a complimentary year of AI Pro and a new Gemini Student Hub.
Gemini is acquiring more tools to aid students in studying, organizing, and researching.
Google is currently trailing behind OpenAI and Anthropic in the race for top-tier frontier models. Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol both outperform Gemini 3.1 Pro on key independent benchmarks, while Google's anticipated Gemini 3.5 Pro is still in testing, reportedly falling short of internal performance goals.
As Google works towards bridging that gap, it is aggressively promoting Gemini to a distinct audience. Eligible U.S. college students can now acquire Google AI Pro completely free for one year, accompanied by a new Student Hub specifically designed for studying, coursework, and research.
