      Google is enhancing Gemini Live with the introduction of the Deep Research feature. This update is being rolled out today to all users of the Gemini app, allowing you to initiate a comprehensive research task via a voice conversation and later return to view the completed report.

      Deep Research has been available in Gemini for a while. Rather than providing a quick chatbot response, Gemini can explore various sources, pursue relevant leads, and compile a more extensive report with citations. While the process may take a few minutes, you don’t have to keep the app open while it works. You will receive a notification once the research is complete.

      Deep Research surpasses a standard Gemini query.

      Many platforms now feature a Deep Research tool. ChatGPT has one, Claude offers one, and Gemini has had its own for some time. Instead of delivering a quick answer, Gemini can search across various sources, follow pertinent leads, and create a longer report complete with citations. It can also handle uploaded files and information from connected Google services such as Gmail and Drive.

      The process can take several minutes, so it’s better suited for questions that require thorough research rather than immediate answers. Plus, you don’t have to wait idly; Gemini can keep working in the background and will notify you when the report is ready.

      Switching between voice and text is seamless.

      The Gemini Live integration allows users to maintain the context of the Deep Research report while alternating between voice and text. For instance, you might initiate a research request through Live, lock your phone while Gemini conducts the research, and later return to discuss the findings vocally. You can then switch to typing for a follow-up question or to refine part of the report without starting a new conversation.

      Google unveiled this feature as part of a broader back-to-school update, which includes a student hub, study notebooks, and interactive visualizations. However, the Deep Research feature in Gemini Live is not exclusive to students; it is being made available to all users of the Gemini app.

      Windows 11’s frustrating Drag Tray feature is finally being eliminated.

      Microsoft is discontinuing one of Windows 11's more unconventional file-sharing experiments after users indicated that the feature was often more annoying than beneficial. The Drag Tray feature was intended to provide a quicker method for sharing files. Users could select a file in File Explorer, drag it towards the top of the screen, where a floating panel would appear with shortcuts for sending it to applications. While the concept was straightforward, many users were already dragging files to that area of the screen for entirely different purposes.

      OpenAI seeks to monitor AI misuse without requiring customers to give up their data.

      OpenAI aims to improve its detection of misuse of its advanced AI models without asking privacy-conscious customers to relinquish Zero Data Retention. In an announcement on August 19, OpenAI introduced its Private Safety Processing system, designed to identify suspicious conduct across multiple interactions while maintaining ZDR for eligible API users. OpenAI states that its current ZDR safeguards assess requests individually, making it challenging to recognize patterns across several interactions. Private Safety Processing is intended to bridge that gap without granting OpenAI employees access to the underlying prompts or responses.

      Gemini is receiving additional tools to assist students with studying, organizing, and researching.

      Google currently trails OpenAI and Anthropic in the advanced model race. Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol both outperform Gemini 3.1 Pro on key independent benchmarks, while Google’s anticipated Gemini 3.5 Pro remains under testing after reportedly not meeting internal performance standards. As Google works to close this gap, it is simultaneously pushing Gemini aggressively toward a different audience. Eligible U.S. college students can now obtain Google AI Pro for free for an entire year, alongside a new Student Hub specifically designed for studying, coursework, and research.
