YouTube is increasing view counts, yet creators aren't becoming wealthier.

YouTube is redefining what constitutes a ‘view,’ resulting in a surge in view counts for creators. Beginning August 24, 2026, YouTube will count a view as soon as a video starts playing — capturing the very first frame — and this change will apply globally to long-form videos, Shorts, and livestreams.

YouTube also notes that creators can anticipate quicker increases in their overall public view counts. Essentially, it will no longer require viewers to watch for a significant time to contribute to the total view metric displayed.

YouTube is taking cues from Shorts

Since March 31, 2025, Shorts creators have experienced a similar approach, as YouTube counts a view from the moment the video starts playing or replaying, without a minimum viewing duration. The previous method has been kept separately as Engaged views within YouTube Analytics.

Now, YouTube is unifying its view-counting methodology across all video formats. The varying systems had caused confusion among creators trying to gauge their audience reach across Shorts, standard videos, and livestreams. As a result, public view totals should increase more rapidly. Even if someone starts a video and quickly exits, their action will still influence the total visible view count.

As a result, a YouTube view is increasingly becoming an indicator of exposure, while metrics like watch time remain essential for assessing viewer retention.

      More views won't simplify monetization

Creators should not expect that higher view counts will lead to instant monetization opportunities. YouTube states that earnings will still depend on Engaged Shorts views and Engaged Watch Hours accessible through Analytics. The criteria for joining the YouTube Partner Program will remain the same, but YouTube is rebranding “valid public watch hours” and “valid public Shorts views” as qualified watch hours and qualified Shorts views.

This distinction is critical since YouTube recently revealed that new creators will encounter stricter Partner Program requirements starting in February 2027. An improved public view count will not expedite the process of meeting those thresholds. View counts have historically been a significant point of pride for creators, and by next week, achieving one will occur as swiftly as displaying the first frame.

Spotify’s new Running Mode enhances workout playlists

Finding the right music for running seems straightforward until you try it. Your favorite playlist may suit a leisurely jog but feel wrong during intense intervals. Plus, hearing the same few workout songs repeatedly can make even a great playlist feel monotonous.

Spotify believes it has found a better answer. Its new Running Mode is being rolled out to Premium subscribers on Android in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden. Instead of just providing another workout playlist, it curates one tailored to your upcoming run, considering factors like how long you plan to run, the type of workout you want, your musical preferences, and the tempo that aligns with your stride.
