      The setup is refreshingly straightforward. Two Nvidia workstations behind the bar host DeepSeek’s V4 Flash model, allowing customers to experiment and code while enjoying a beer without the burden of a subscription fee. “It’s standard for bars to supply free Wi-Fi with routers,” Song shared with Reuters, “so instead, I’ll offer free tokens.” The feasibility of this approach is largely attributed to the rise of affordable Chinese AI models that have effectively competed with their more expensive Western counterparts.

      The walls are adorned with logos from major AI labs in China, the menu features insider humor from the sector, and the signature drink—the AGI cocktail—arrives filled almost entirely with beer foam, playfully alluding to the exaggerated excitement surrounding the field. This type of humor resonates particularly well with an audience of industry insiders.

      Visitors note that the bar's offerings play along with this theme. Regular customers can purchase a “Drinking Plan” that provides free beer for a year, order a concoction called the “AGI bubble,” and view a screen showcasing job openings at AI companies while they work. The AGI Bar thus serves as a hub for socializing, recruiting, and a little group therapy in an industry grappling with questions about whether it’s on the brink of groundbreaking advancements or facing a significant downturn.

      The humor is underscored by tangible economic realities. DeepSeek emerged as a significant player in early 2025 when its affordable, efficient models triggered what many termed a “Sputnik moment” for American AI, and since then, the lab has consistently brought down the price of advanced cognitive technology. Operating the V4 Flash on two workstations at a cost low enough to pair with a beer is feasible only because DeepSeek and similar domestic firms have drastically reduced inference costs.
