      I frequently work with spreadsheets, so I'm well aware of how quickly they can become unwieldy. What begins as a tidy table can quickly expand into hundreds of rows, numerous columns, and a lot of scrolling to locate the specific information you need. Google believes that Gemini can significantly improve that experience.

      The company is launching Sheets canvas, a new Gemini-driven feature that transforms data stored in a Google Sheets spreadsheet into a format resembling a custom mini-app. Rather than creating charts, formatting cells, or tackling complex formulas manually, you can simply instruct Gemini on what you wish to create. For instance, you might request it to convert a spreadsheet filled with assignments into a visual study tracker. Gemini will utilize the existing information in your sheet to construct an interactive interface.

      Your spreadsheet doesn't have to look like a typical spreadsheet.

      What makes Sheets canvas particularly intriguing is that it doesn't merely produce an attractive dashboard and call it done. Google depicts it as a read-and-write layer that overlays your existing spreadsheet, meaning the two stay interconnected. If you modify something through your newly created canvas, the underlying spreadsheet will also be updated. Conversely, if you edit the original sheet, those changes will reflect on the canvas.

      You can continue to communicate with Gemini if the initial version isn’t exactly what you envisioned. You can request adjustments to the layout, modify the design, or add features without having to rebuild everything on your own. Moreover, since the canvas is another tab within Google Sheets, sharing and collaborating on it works just like it does with the spreadsheet itself.

      This could make Sheets much more user-friendly.

      There are numerous scenarios where this could prove beneficial. A student might convert a cluttered list of assignments and due dates into a study dashboard that makes upcoming deadlines easier to identify. Google even recommends using Sheets canvas for wedding planning, enabling RSVP data to become an interactive seating chart where you can drag guests between tables while keeping the original spreadsheet synchronized.

      That adaptability is what makes Sheets canvas especially compelling. You’re still utilizing spreadsheets to store and organize your information, but you won’t have to devote your day to staring at cells to utilize it. Sheets canvas is being rolled out globally in English. It is accessible to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, along with eligible Google Workspace Business and Enterprise customers and users of the Google AI Pro for Education add-on.
