An AI company compensated individuals to reach climax with a robot. It now asserts significant achievements in stress management and concentration.
I recently spoke with a few college students, and during our conversation, I learned about some intriguing ways students are currently utilizing AI. The applications vary widely, from assisting with research to being used as an emergency cheating aid. However, what truly captured my attention was when one student revealed that she sometimes prompts ChatGPT to roleplay as her boyfriend. This trend isn’t entirely new or surprising.
There exists a community of people who find companionship or solace in virtual characters that serve as friends, partners, mentors, or whatever they might be looking for. While the concept is somewhat controversial, it appears to be here for the long haul. Joi AI, a company that provides AI companions as a service, recently conducted a study to explore whether erotic sessions guided by an AI bot could be just as fulfilling as traditional methods of self-pleasure like pornography or fantasy.
The company invested $2,000 per month in ten “Masturbation Consultants” chosen from over 150,000 applicants. The goal was to determine if self-pleasure could evolve into an AI-guided wellness practice. According to Joi AI, it can. They report that participants’ satisfaction levels during AI-guided sessions averaged 7.22 on a scale of 1-10, which is comparable to using toys (7.6), watching porn (7.31), and fantasizing about the act or a person (7.27).
Interestingly, Joi AI asserts that “37% of adults are either open to AI-guided masturbation or are already engaging in it.” Furthermore, they state that stress levels dropped by 25% following AI-guided self-pleasure sessions, focus increased by 17%, and participants experienced a 19% reduction in mental restlessness. Overall, the company aims to normalize self-pleasure through the introduction of erotic AI companions.
Joi AI also claims that after these sessions, participants not only felt relief and a surge of creativity but also experienced a 44% decrease in cravings for substances like nicotine, alcohol, junk food, and excessive scrolling of social media. However, this is a bold claim, and there is no scientific backing to suggest that achieving orgasm can genuinely suppress these cravings.
If you’re curious, Joi AI offers access to its provocative AI companion service for $3.99 per month, with more premium options like videos of an AI companion requiring tokens purchased with real money. What do they offer? “From official digital replicas of real celebrities to custom characters derived from your imagination, we simplify the search for love, sex, and romance without the complexities of dating,” the company explains.
Joi AI claims its service alleviates many of the typical pitfalls associated with real-life dating. However, opinions among experts vary. In discussions with sex therapists and psychologists over the past couple of years, I’ve detected a sense of caution, discomfort, and uncertainty as recurring themes. After all, when such trends start to interfere with genuine social interactions and behavioral patterns, and when individuals begin to have children with their virtual AI partners, it may signify that something has gone fundamentally awry.
