      Captain's chairs have finally arrived in the Rivian R1S, much to the delight of owners.

      Rivian has introduced an updated version of its flagship R1S and R1T models for 2027, with the standout feature being the optional second-row captain's chairs that many have been asking for. The entire R1 lineup now features a more straightforward trim structure and a new color option. Pricing remains unchanged, starting at $83,990 for the R1S and $79,990 for the R1T.

      For years, owners of the Rivian R1S expressed frustration over the second-row bench seat, particularly parents struggling to help their children into the third row. Some even removed their bench seats to install aftermarket options as a solution. Rivian notes that this feature was the most requested by customers, and now buyers can replace the bench with two individual captain's chairs.

      Each captain's chair comes with a built-in armrest that lies flush when not in use and a push-to-release cupholder along the seat's inner edge. Both chairs are heated, can fold flat, and include full tie-down anchors for child car seats, ensuring families retain all functional benefits when opting for this setup over the standard bench.

      The larger space between the seats facilitates easier access to the third row as well as the ability to slide items, such as skis and surfboards, through the cabin effortlessly. The classic seven-seat bench remains an option for those who prefer it, but upgrading to captain's chairs will cost between $1,500 and $4,500, depending on the chosen interior theme. Additionally, opting for the captain's chairs requires Rivian’s $2,500 Sound and Vision package as a prerequisite.

      Streamlined trims and enhanced features for the R1T

      Rivian has also simplified its trim naming system, abandoning its former model designations based on motor count—Dual, Tri, and Quad—replacing them with Premium, Performance, and Quad, similar to its R2 lineup. Performance metrics, however, remain consistent across all models.

      The R1T also sees improvements, including a new 20-inch Adventure All Season wheel and tire combination designed to enhance off-road traction without compromising on-road range. This new wheel setup comes standard on the Premium trim and is available at no extra cost on the Performance trim.

      Both the R1S and R1T now come with Esker Silver, a liquid metal paint finish first introduced in the R2, which replaces the previous LA Silver as the standard color across the lineup. These updates are available for configuration now, with deliveries expected to commence later this year.
