Samsung is said to be utilizing Claude to accelerate the chip design process.

Samsung engineers are utilizing Claude Code to automate parts of semiconductor verification and software development, with one task reportedly completed in just two days instead of over a month.

Samsung has turned to AI to expedite one of the slowest aspects of chip design. A report from Chosun Biz indicates that the company's engineers are using Anthropic’s Claude to significantly speed up specific tasks, with one project finished approximately fifteen times faster than the typical duration.

The semiconductor verification task was reduced from over a month to two days.

According to the report, Samsung Electronics’ System LSI division has been employing Claude Code for semiconductor verification and software development. The company provided developers access to the tool in May and has since expanded its application to specialized chip design projects.

With the assistance of Claude, engineers reportedly completed the verification environment and testing for a System-on-Chip (SoC) project in just two days, a task estimated to take over a month. In another instance, a second-year engineer, unfamiliar with Claude Code or USB communication standards, managed to finish a task in one day that typically would take about a month.

AI may help Samsung offset its smaller chip design workforce.

These outcomes are particularly significant for the System LSI division, which has a workforce considerably smaller than its major competitors. The report suggests that the division employs around 6,000 people, while its primary competitor, Qualcomm, has more than 52,000.

Samsung seems to be leveraging AI to bridge that gap by automating repetitive tasks and assisting engineers in navigating unfamiliar technologies. However, the company does not consider Claude as a substitute for human engineers, as there have been instances where the AI misinterpreted instructions, altered unrelated work, or tried to change circuit design code when it was only meant to analyze verification results.

To mitigate such issues, Samsung is involving engineers to determine what Claude focuses on and to review its output before proceeding. If the company can manage errors effectively, Claude could provide Samsung's smaller chip design team with the productivity enhancement necessary to compete with larger rivals.
