Bumble has recently altered the rules regarding who can initiate the first move.

      Bumble is altering one of the core rules that have distinguished the dating app since it started: now, either member in a match is permitted to send the first message.

      This update is being introduced globally today, allowing both men and women greater flexibility in how conversations initiate. Additionally, Bumble is increasing the response window from 24 hours to 72 hours, making it less likely for a potentially promising match to fade away just because someone was busy for a day.

      This represents a significant departure for an app founded on the principle that women should initiate contact. Bumble asserts that the update does not abandon this principle but rather offers users more options in how they begin conversations.

      There are still guidelines to the new approach. The individual who sends the first message is allowed just one initial message, and the chat is only activated once the other person replies. Bumble will also encourage users to reconsider very low-effort opening lines, like one-word responses, before sending them.

      Bumble reports that its testing indicated an increase in the initiation of chats, with opening messages becoming more evenly shared between men and women. Over half of the members surveyed said the extended response time enhanced their experience, while 92% of women indicated that they still felt in command of their dating journey.

      This point is crucial because Bumble seeks to modify a well-known experience without compromising the safety and control that originally set it apart from other dating platforms.

      Bumble maintains that women still have the option to initiate conversations, but research indicates that many, particularly among Gen-Z women, value having the option for men to start conversations as well. Almost two-thirds of the surveyed individuals mentioned that having a choice in how and when a conversation begins boosts their confidence.

      Bumble aims to ensure matches endure in real life.

      The broader issue Bumble is tackling is not just about who sends the initial "Hey." It's about the reality that people lead busy lives, and dating applications excel at converting a missed day into a lost opportunity.

      By extending the response window to three days, matches are afforded more flexibility, while Bumble's testing also showed a reduction in chat expirations and unmatching. The rate of mutual chats for women increased at a rate more than twice that of men during the testing phase.

      This adjustment also aligns with Bumble’s larger goal of enhancing the experience that follows the matching process. The company has recently launched updated Profile Prompts and AI-driven profile feedback, and it intends to introduce further features designed to assist users in transitioning from matching to actual dates.

      In essence, Bumble is not entirely forsaking its original concept. It is relaxing one of its most recognizable rules in response to changing dating dynamics, as one of the biggest barriers to starting a conversation can often be simply being busy at the inopportune moment.
