SpaceX plans to capture a Starship from the sky this month.
SpaceX aims to catch a skyscraper descending from the sky. The company plans to launch its next Starship this month and, for the first time, attempt to catch the returning upper stage using the large robotic arms on its launch tower.
Elon Musk outlined this strategy during SpaceX's first earnings call since going public, which occurred three months after a Starship V3 booster exploded just before the listing. Flight 14 might take off before the end of August, pending regulatory approval.
Successfully catching the upper stage would mark a significant achievement, as SpaceX has already captured the Super Heavy booster three times with the tower's chopstick arms, but the Ship—responsible for reaching orbit and returning—has never been caught previously.
This flight will also have a practical purpose. It will transport Starlink V3 satellites to an operational orbit, representing the first time Starship delivers functional payloads instead of test payloads.
Confidence stems from a recent successful flight. The previous launch in late July was a success, and its heat shield withstood re-entry without damage, overcoming years of difficulty with the tiles being Starship's most persistent issue. Musk even stated that he considers the heat shield problem resolved, a rare assertion of success.
Catching the ship instead of landing it on legs saves both weight and turnaround time, which are critical to the economics Musk aims to achieve. A vehicle that returns to the tower could, in theory, be refueled and relaunched within hours.
The context is a company transformed by its public listing. SpaceX went public in June, raising $86 billion with a valuation of $1.77 trillion, and reported second-quarter revenue of $7.8 billion, a 92% increase from the previous year.
Much of that revenue still comes from the existing sky it controls. Starlink generated $4.3 billion in the quarter, providing the funds necessary for the much more expensive aspirations of Starship and Mars exploration.
Musk's ambitions for progress remain characteristically grand. He indicated that the frequency of flights would increase significantly, predicting that ‘a year from now, we will be doing at least one flight a day, possibly more.’
However, these timelines should be viewed with skepticism. Musk's schedules have a history of delays, and the transition from irregular test flights to daily launches represents a leap that no rocket program has achieved.
Starship's journey has been challenging as is typical for complex engineering endeavors. Flights have faced postponements, and boosters have exploded, with each setback now occurring under the scrutiny of public markets.
Being publicly traded raises the stakes of failure. A major explosion, once a normal occurrence for SpaceX, now serves as a data point for shareholders who have valued the company above the largest publicly listed firms.
The overarching goal remains unchanged. Starship is the spacecraft Musk plans to use for missions to Mars, and it is also crucial for NASA's efforts to return astronauts to the Moon, making its progress of interest well beyond the space sector.
More than just satellites are at stake. SpaceX intends to launch an AI megaconstellation called Starmind starting in 2027, among several initiatives that rely on Starship's successful scaling in the near future.
The significance of reusability is paramount. A rocket that can catch and relaunch itself, including the upper stage, distinguishes space travel as a commercial endeavor from a mere spectacle.
European attempts to develop a competitor to Starlink are lagging, and a Starship capable of catching itself would further enhance SpaceX's advantage.
For now, the objective is to execute a catch, deliver a payload, and establish a flight cadence. If the arms successfully grasp the Ship this month, SpaceX will accomplish something no one else has attempted, all while broadcasting live as a publicly traded company.
