      If you believe AI writing is easily identifiable, a recent study indicates that you might be overestimating your ability to discern the difference. Researchers from Villanova University found that readers had trouble distinguishing AI-generated narratives from those created by humans, often rating the AI pieces more favorably.

      The study, directed by Dr. Deena Skolnick Weisberg and published in the journal Judgment and Decision Making (as reported by The Guardian), involved over 1,600 participants who were asked to evaluate one of six short stories, with three composed by a human and three generated by ChatGPT, based on quality and engagement. While participants were informed of the story's authorship, this designation was not always accurate.

      Readers exposed to an AI-generated story found it to be more engaging and of higher quality than those who read a human-written story. Conversely, stories attributed to human authors received better scores than those marked as AI, independent of the actual authorship.

      Weisberg notes that these findings illustrate how much more adept AI has become at creating engaging and readable fiction than many people realize. However, she emphasized that this does not render human authors obsolete.

      The majority of readers were unable to discern the difference.

      In a subsequent test, participants were presented with one human-written and one AI-generated story on the same theme and asked to identify which was which. They largely struggled with this task, guessing correctly only about as often as would be expected by random chance. The group that performed significantly better consisted of individuals who described themselves as having greater familiarity with AI systems, suggesting that recognizing AI writing may be a skill that can be learned rather than an innate ability.

      Earlier this year, the Commonwealth Short Story Prize experienced a similar issue when online readers identified three out of its five winning entries as AI-generated, a claim that an AI-detection tool also supported. The prize's publisher conducted an independent evaluation, which yielded inconclusive results. Hence, if experienced judges and readers with reputations at stake are unable to resolve the issue, it may be unrealistic to expect casual readers to make such distinctions.
